O'Sullivan's Cascade

One of my favourite places is Tomies Wood in Killarney - a fine broadleaved forest and deep within it is one of the most under-visited sights in the area: the waterfall known as O'Sullivan's Cascade. I've been there several times over the last few years and I have rarely met another person.

For those that are interested in going there: take the turn off to the Gap of Dunloe on the main Killarney to Killorglin road. This is about a mile to the west of Killarney town. Follow the road until you come to a sign indicating Lough Leane. Take the road to Lough Leane. Drive until you come to a bridge over a stream and park. You will see a sign saying No Driving Beyond This Point. Go through the gate and follow the path leading to the wood. You will pass by a farmhouse. Continue on the path for about 30 minutes and you will come to the waterfall.

I was there last Sunday and this was one of the images I captured:

Anyone ever get any shots of Peddlar's Lake between Tralee and Dingle on the Cconnor Pass? I've been meaning to get some down there for ages.

    Nice shot indeed.

Oh, just one question. When you say go past the sign where no cars are allowed, is that in the car or were you walking by this point?? :D

thats the place. I'd love to bring a super-wide or a fisheye up there, it's so hard to get back far enough to get it all in

Great shot, the composition is good, really well exposed just long enough for the water to look really nice.

I've been there a number of years ago and have plans to back at the end of the month, there's a number of places in Killarney that I've on my list to visit. I remember the walk in through the woods as being really peaceful and as you say quite, rarely meet anyone and then the rewards of the cascade make it really worth it.

    Nice shot carrigman.
It inspired me to throw the kids into the car today and drive there as i know Killarney reasonably well but had never seen the cascade.
Your directions were excellent, parked the car and the two kids and i plus our dog (a King Charles) headed off but near the farm was a gate with a sign "no dogs allowed" Now we are regular visitors to the national park and always bring the dog. we walked up towards the farmhouse with the dog on the lead but were immediatly hailed and told no dogs allowed. I could get no info on why just that they are !!! Is this route a right of way ?? I have been in Muckross House gardens on a regular basis and had the dog on a lead with us and no problems.
Any body got any comments on this, i am a little annoyed as we are about an hours drive from Killarney and i had the son hyped up to take some photos of the cascade with his new camera.

It's a pity you weren't allowed bring your dog especially as he was on a lead. I don't understand why. The field you walk through and the farmhouse are private property but when you enter the wood you are in the Killarney National Park.

    Thanks Carrigman
    Cant argue with private property.
I dont suppose you know of any alternate routes to the cascade.
    Thanks
