I recieved an e-mail from mag Ireland today Which reads as follows

    Folks

It has come to MAG Ireland's attention that Dublin City Council have
acquired some motorcycle clamps. We immediately contacted them to
confirm this fact and to ask in what circumstances they proposed to
use them. We received the reply set out below. We also contacted the
other three local authorities in the Dublin area namely Fingal, South
Dublin and Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown and they all confirmed that they did
not clamp motorcycles nor were they planning to do so. So anyone
bringing your bike in to the City area be careful not to park same in
such a way as to block pedestrian access or cause a hazard. Otherwise
you should have no problem. We have asked the City Council to identify
the problem locations and if we are so informed, we will let you know.

    Yours in biking

    Gearóid O'Byrne
    MAG Ireland

I refer to your recent telephone conversations
with Mr. Tim O'Sullivan concerning clamping of
motorcycles in Dublin City and I regret very
much the delay in replying formally to you on this issue.

In this connection, I wish to confirm that the
Council has recently arranged for the
    acquisition by the parking enforcement
contractor of a number of clamps suitable for
use on motorcycles. It is intended to use these
clamps to enforce illegally parked bikes at
    specific commercial/retail premises where
significant problems have arisen due to the
proliferation of motorcycles on the footway outside these premises.

It is not intended to use these clamps to
enforce individual motorbikes at other locations
in the city. However, the Council requests that
your members exercise due care and consideration
    when parking their motorcycles.

I hope that the foregoing clarifies the position for you.

    Brian Riddick

Unless they provide suitable motorcycle parking spaces throughout the city they have no right to clamp any motorcycle.

Anyone know where they are talking about?

For my own part I've never parked on a footpath in such a way as to force pedestrians to have to avoid my bike. If for no other reason then I don't want them bumping into or scratching it. Also anywhere I've seen bikes in town gather in numbers would be near to those bicycle parking points for the obvious reason of chaining the motorbikes to it.

So I'm at a loss as to where significant problems have arisen.

What about these things damaging spokes etc. You think all is well after they've removed the clamp until your front wheel buckles and you hit the ground.

    Hello all,
As far as I understand it, it is illegal to park a motorcycle in a car parking space in Dublin. Also, there are as you have pointed out, no dedicated parking spaces supplied by Dublin City Council. Therefore, it seems to me that until both of these situations change, they will be unable to clamp a motorcycle.
There are many more hazards involved in clamping a motorbike that don't occur when clamping a car - such as damage to wheels that are integral to the balance of the vehicle, damage to the brake lines (that vary from bike to bike), damage to the brake discs (that again vary from bike to bike) - just a few examples.
I for one would question the legality of this move by the council and will try to find out more and post it here.
I normally post in the classic car section for my sins but am an avid biker and have been for 20 years. I currently ride a tiger 1050 and would always take care where I park. For safety and practicality to pedestrians and the bike!
I cannot believe that this has slipped under the radar and my own opinion is that we aid traffic flow and decongestion. Totally bonkers!

If there is any questions, what clamp? what bike? :D (Provided you don't have a big brother CCTV staring down at you!!!)
