    + 1!

But I think Jonny Cash is overplayed to be honest, it doesnt do it for me anymore. I really like Pantera doing Planet Caravan and Rage Against The MAchine doing Renegades of Funk

Could the Prince version of this song be considered a cover seeing that he didn't record the song until after Sinead? Her version is great but Prince's is even better.

The original, though written by Prince, was written for and recorded by a band called The Family. This was this version Sinead covered.

BTW, has anyone ever heard the original? Is it any good?

I move for a merge cause there's no need for another thread. Not like this one's way out of date -

Adam Green - What a waster....in a word...amazing. SO much better than the original.
Have to agree on the - Man who sold the world
    - Nothing Compares to you
    - Valerie
    - Hallelujah
Can't say I'm a fan of the Arctic Monkeys doing Girls Aloud. The song is just too awful.

Arctic Monkeys version was out five months earlier (than the Sugababes covering it btw rather than Girls Aloud, it was the b-side of 'Red Dress') - it was written by Alex Turner after all.

The Frames cover of "Everytime" by Britney Spears
The Killers really do justice to "Romeo & Juliette" too (Dire Straits)
Rodrigo y Gabriella do some excellent covers (Orion, Stairway, Wish You Were Here)

Cobain singing "The Man Who Sold the World" has to be my favourite though.

+1 Brilliant. I think their cover of Whiskey In The Jar is brilliant too. COMPLETELY different from the original.

A list of some obvious ones:

    Hurt - Johnny Cash
I Hung My Head - Johnny Cash
We'll Meet Again - Johnny Cash (in fact most of the American Recordings covers he did)
    Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley
Whiskey in the Jar - Metallica
The man who sold the world - Nirvana
    Nothing compares 2 u - Sinead O Connor
    Valerie - Amy Winehouse
    Kiss - Tom Jones
Not Fade Away - Queen (live)
    My Hometown - U2 (live)
Big Yellow Taxi - Counting Crows
Somewhere Over The Rainbow/What a Wonderful World - Israel Kamakawiwol
Take Me Home Country Road - Israel Kamakawiwol (it's a miracle if I spelt his name correctly. Sorry IZ, R.I.P)
Listen to your heart - DHT
Fields of Gold - Eva Cassidy
With a little help from my friends - Joe Cocker
Knockin' on Heavens Door - Guns n Roses
    Imagine - Jack Johnson
    Killer Queen - Travis
    Feeling Good - Muse
How Deep Is Your Love - Take That
Somethin' Stupid - Robbie Williams/Nicole Kidman
    Helter Skelter - U2
Hit Me Baby One More Time - Travis
L.O.V.E - Joss Stone ( Who did this origionally does anyone know? I love this song..)

...I could go on...I heard a really good acoustic version of Rihanna's Umbrella but I don't know who did it..love all those acoustic versions of pop songs. Or else heavy metal versions of old songs. Tainted Love by Marilyn Manson is good.

Oh, and I'll leave the best to last:

    Proud Mary - Tina Turner

This word is so overused but she really is a legend.

Saul Williams - Sunday Bloody Sunday
Thin Lizzy - Whiskey In The Jar
    Thin Lizzy - Rosalie

...and I prefer Frank Black's solo versions of most Pixies stuff
