Lying about Salary

I don't want to go into too much detail but I currently receive a (really) low basic salary plus commission. My boss puts my commission payments through as expenses so I don't pay any tax (and he doesn't have to pay PRSI etc ). I'm in the process of looking at other jobs and most employers want details of my current salary, what I want to know is should I tell the truth or lie? I'm afraid that if I tell the truth they're not going to offer me much more, but if I lie they will find out and that would look a lot worse. What is generally seen as the best thing to do?

I think you have to tell the truth. They're going to find out your true salary when they receive your P45. Just be stern and refuse any offer if you feel that they're offering you far less than a similar candidate. With any luck, you'll get a fair offer. It helps if you have a second offer from a different company as well.

Can you tell me how much you're earning, how much experience you have, what you do and what job you are applying for?

IMO you should say "I want X" rather than "I earn Y".

You dont have to give them your P45 do you? You can get a tax credit cert from the revenue and give them that instead.

The accounts people are the only ones who see the P45 anyway.

Hmm, this is funny because i was offered a contract with my previous employer with X salary so when i went for interviews i told them i needed minimum of X salary but with more :)
    Worked for me

In your situation i think i want X for this, i have xyxyxy experience e.t.c.
No need to say how much you earn

Yeah I know someone who doubled their salary when they moved jobs by putting it like that.
They asked him straight out what his salary was; he replied by stating what he wanted. They didn't push it and gave him what he asked for.

Thanks, I think I'll just try to avoid answering the question so. A couple of the jobs that I've been looking at ask for details of my current salary which has put me off applying, I didn't want to lie only to get found out later :o

Just apply and see what happens. That question's usually there so the company avoids unnecessarily interviewing people that it can't afford. Like if the jobs offering 30k, then there's no point in interviewing people currently on 50k. What salary you'll get will depend more on your negotiation tactics than your current salary.
