just got my nikkor 50mm 1.8 in the post. Tried it out there but every time i go under f22 i get a message on the lcd saying "lock lens aperture ring at minimum aperture "

EDIT - fixed it the problem, sorry!

Set the aperture on the lens to f/1.8. You can then select the aperature from the camera.

Edit: whoops as thirdfox said. I always get them mixed up when not looking at the lens

Set it to f22 and change the aperture on camera (via the dials). The maximum is f1.8 and the minimum is f22 - confusing terms for those of think bigger numbers = better = max etc.

Edit: how are you finding the manual focusing? I found that I can pretty much get it sharp for 80% of shots on first try (some of the blurring is due to low shutter speed I'm guessing). At least you have metering (I have to use my lens completely manually).

thanks lads, yea, was trying to set the apeture on the lens instead of in camera. Focusing is tricky but gonna play with it now for a bit before work. thanks again.

I had the very same problem happen to me last week.

I bought my lens second hand and was a bit freaked out at first when I got the same error and couldn't lock the lens at anything other than f22.

Managed to figure it out though. :)

    You got the same lens?

Remember to give reverse mounting macro a try!

    Here's a handheld 1st flower macro attempt:

So you're just hand holding the lens in reverse?

    Pretty cool.

    Might try it out later.

You can also handhold in front of another lens (telephoto zoom preferably) then you go into super macro mode (4:1 reproduction!!!!) I'm getting a male - male filter ring so I can attach the two lenses together (and also get metering, autofocus somewhat works - can give tiny adjustments) VR doesn't work at all at this scale.
