I've been tasked with selecting a smallish laptop for a relative but I'm not too sure as to what other brands to be looking at.

I've just had a look at a couple of the Dell models and the D430 seems to not come with a CD/ DVD drive which would be a requirement, and I have not been able to see if the XPS1330 model has the same flashing lights and go faster stripes of the bigger XPS models which would not be appropriate for this person.

Which models from any other manufactures would people recommend for 13" ish, or less, sized laptops? Ive been told the budget they are looking at is for under £1000, and that is GBP not Euros.

The M1330 doesn't have any of the flashing light rubbish.

I highly recommend the Dell Latitude D410/D420/D430 range as their as reliable as they come, sure no CD drive but you can get an external one, quite simply I love my one!
Also you can try the IBM X40/X41 which also come in Tablet format to be extra posh.
As recommended above the Sony's and Panasonic options as also very sleek and stylish, the panasonic option being slightly more rugged and forgiving thatn the Sony.
You have a good budget for the machine your looking for, personally if it was myself I'd go for the IBM/Lenovo option.
Check out www.laptopsdirect.ie as they have a vast range on show and will allow you to window shop a bit before making an informed decision.

I have an M1330 and am very happy with it.

The Sony SZ series are also worth checking out!

Here's all the 13" laptops on elara. There are some nice laptops there well within your budget. I like the look of this one. Serious spec for the money. If your looking for something a bit more basic then you could save about €200 or so.
