USB 2.0 squeaks

I have a pocket external drive which I use with Firewire 400, but it's also got a USB 2.0 cable. I plugged this in, thinking "Oho, this will be faster" - but the drive instantly started giving distressed squeaky beeps and flashing a red light. Any idea what the problem might be? It's working fine still on Firewire.

Firstly, for sustained transfers Firewire 400 is quicker than USB 2.0. Firewire is a full duplex 4 wire system where USB isn't - it uses 2 wires for data.

The squeak might be a power issue - if there isn't enough juice the drive may be struggling to spin up. Try a different/shorter cable maybe ?

Pocket drives sometimes need a USB Y-cable (i.e. with 2nd USB connector) for extra power.
But like ZENER says, FW is superior :D

It's only a teenshy cable. I thought USB 2.0 was faster than Firewire. I'll stick with the Firewire, so. Thanks, lads.
