I am just wondering what peoples advice would be?

I recommend checking out the transition year board.

I did transition year and I thoroughly enjoyed it. How good a year it is depends largely on your school, though. There's a lot of arguments for and against transition year, I'll try summarise I guess (and I'm of course quite biased, I'll try not to be)...

    For:
    • good break after JC/before LC
    • fun year/trips etcetera/work experience*
    • mature
    • sometimes you start the LC course early (though I don't think that's allowed, but it happens)
    Against:
    • some find it hard to get back into the daily grind in 5th year/makes you lazy
    • leave school a year later
    • total waste of time*
    • pricey (with trips and all)
    * = depends on your school, can be good, can be bad. Find out from people who've done it before whether or not your school runs a good TY.

I did it last year and would definately recomend it. The complete lack of work last year somehow motivated me to work this year, certainly much more than I did in 3rd year. Also you get to try what subjects you want to do next year, that was a massive help for me. As was the work experience because if I hadn't done it, I would be aiming for a career with no real job prospects and insane bordem with the job if I did manage to get one.

Can't say enough good things about TY, was the most memorable school year by some distance. More great memories in that year than the other five put together!

Do it- its brilliant! I'm in TY at the moment and I'm loving it.

The only thing i will say is Its what you make of it. You need to put your name down for the extra things etc... My schools TY programme is actually terirble and isn't much different to First year (we basically do all the subjects offered for LC) but I've had such a good time with my friends and do stuff outside school which ahs really made it for me.

You only gain from what you put in. I put in a good bit of work last year in TY and it was enjoyablem, but plenty of people in my year hated it because they didn't put anything into it. The hardest part is getting back into working in 5th year.

It was a top laugh when I did it, but as soon as it was over I regreted it, would have much prefered to go straight to 5th.

do it, you probably wont regret it, im in 5th year now and adjusting is too bad at all

but if you want to enjoy it, dont be cynical get involved, do stuff you wouldnt normally do, make an effort and you'll be rewarded with one of the best years of secondary school

DO NOT however go on a year long drinking session, your liver and your brain will hate you for it

It does differ from school to school, from what I've heard from people I've talked to, private schools tend to have a better TY as they have more money and can subsidise some of the dearer stuff, but that said I go to a public school and our TY was fantastic!

I'd say talk to someone whos either in TY now or Fifth Year, they'd be able to give you the best advice!

actually i thought your TY was better run from what i heard from people involved in the fashion show etc :) (then i saw the year book, and i was certain, yours looked considerably more fun)

    the main thing is,

you get out of TY what you put in.
im having the best year ever, i volunteer for everything, i do everything etc etc

a few of my mates are doing nothing, and they always moan the year is bad!

oh right, what do you do at that?

I would 100% advise you to do TY! It is a gret year, and you get to experience so many things you would miss out on if you go staight into 5th Year. It gives you the chance to relax, as 5th is quite tough going. I disagree about it making you lazy, i felt more eager to get down to work after TY and ready to get back into the swing of things. A good advantage of TY is it helps you bond with more people in your year, and work experience is a great thing about TY as well!

Yeah I was saying that my school seems to be an exception to the "private schools have better TYs" idea, it really was great!

Did you read my yearbook article which was really just a page of fat jokes?

yes your yearbook is DEFINITLY unusual, my year book is written by this wagon of a woman and is terrible.

yours is genuinely entertaining at times, how is it run?
