    Wireless usb dongle?

You can also get internal version for PCs and laptops

haha, ok sorry, in my effort to explain what I need in the simplest terms I didn't realise it would also look like a wireless dongle.

    My problem is this:

I use a laptop for on call for work. I can't use a wireless PCMCIA card, or a USB dongle or an internal wireless NIC with it. My only interface to a network device is via Ethernet. Also, I need to connect to my router which must be set to bridge mode. So essentially what I'm asking is, is there a way to have wireless communication between my laptop and my wireless router via some piece of equipment (X) which can be connected to the ethernet port and is transparent to the laptop?

Another wireless router is one possibility.

What you're looking for is a wireless ethernet bridge. Such as this one from Linksys. Shop around on ebay for better value.
