Sorry for the unregg - dont want anyone to recognise me in work!

    there,

I am very unhappy in my job, mainly because of my boss, and am currently looking for another. I have my appraisal next week and a friend told me to highlight in this what is making me unhappy..I absolutly adore my job, the people in it etc. apart from this one thing..its complicatde with my boss, she has been there for a very long time (im only there 18 months), longer than the md's..but i dont know whether i am coming from one day to the next with her moods and its making me uneasy, difficult to work in..so i indeed to highlight this (am bricking it but it has to be done!) - would it be very unprofessional to say in the reveiw that I have started the ball rolling to find another job (to stress how upset this is making me)

Im afraid they will turn around and tell me to clear my desk!! Or will I say nothing? I will stay in the job if the working conditions (i.e. her!) improve, because as I said, i love what i do!

It depends, who's going to be reviewing you, your bosses superiors? HR?

You're effectively talking about making a complaint, personally I'd be careful about naming names in an appraisal/review. That'd be more something I'd try to mention to HR or your bosses superiors. Either way thread carefully.

If she's that long-serving, there will be others in the company who know about the mood-swings etc. They may be sympathetic to her, especially if they're caused by some "women's problems" (the worst psycho-boss I've ever met was on IVF). Or they may not, especially if she's caused other people to leave in the past.

I'd say to start by saying everything you like about the job ... and delicately raise your concerns, without naming names. Something bland like "the team atmosphere can be tense at times, especially when responses to questions are inconsistent".

Where the conversation goes next depends on how they respond (I'm assuming the direct boss isn't doing the review), but this approach will give you some vital information about the support you have from the company.

On principle, never say that you're looking for another job: that will just make them thing that the situation is going to resolve itself without them having to do anything (and do-nothing is always the easiest mgmt-action!)

If I was you, I wouldn't say anything critical about that woman. You cannot make her change 'her ways' - I guess her way of 'behaving' is all a characteristic of her personality.

Also, she might become vindictative towards you and make your life at work even more miserable. For example, by making sure to be critical of you and how you do your work - thus ensuring that you get shoite payrises, no chances for promotion etc.

However, is there any other Department with a better boss where you could nicely look for a transfer without stopping what you do or leaving the Company ?

Short of that - I think you should look for another job while bearing in mind that you could meet a worse **** in the next job. But, on the other hand, maybe not ...

I offer you that as reasonable advice given that you said you liked your work. Now - if it was me - I'd fooook her from a height ... but please bear in mind : I'm no 'spring chicken' and, also, I can afford to !
