People in the UK who go online and illegally download music and films may have their internet access cut under plans the government is considering.
    Full story here

Lol, cant really see that happening myself.

    I can't see how it's enforceable.

A pipe dream, no way it can be enforced

It is enforcable, but it would mean major restrictions, i cant see it ever happening!!

Six million people a year are believed to have been downloaded illegally..

I'd say more like 26 million!

I think they will give it a go, but not yet....

They will probably target the uploaders over the next few years on p2p, look at who is uploading what...

Dont think they can touch rapidshare, megashares etc, as its not illegal to use those sites :p

Yeah, and they use Port 80 anyways, i think if they try it will be with some sort of Port Blocking, they can do that pretty easily.

Encryption, password protected archives, even just changing file extensions; good luck to them trying to enforce it. :)

Out of curiosity what is the current state of things in this country? What's the story with downloading tv shows and stuff?

Some of the biggest downloaders are also some of the ISP's best customers. These are people who pay a premium for their broadband so they can have the best connections.

Now they are asking the ISP's to police their best customers & reprimand them accordingly. That's going to work a treat, cant see any problem there.

With torrent encryption & peer guardian 2 the counter measures are already starting to evolve. The cycle of cat & mouse continues.

Are people supposed to continue paying for a service they wont get or would that mean ISP companies should just 'cut off their customers' ? I cant see how thats in their interests - its not like FOX and universal are going to compensate the ISP's for disconnecting customers.

The French are looking to have something similar in place by the Summer. You will receive 2 warnings and if you persist then you are cut off after the 3rd offense.

I'll be keeping an eye on the French scheme, as was said I can't see it being in the ISP's best interest to block off there customers.
I also think that they majority of people who do download will find there's many a way to keep yourself anonymous

But how are they to know your downloading illegal material? there are also legal torrents like linux distros etc. Also is a tv show which has already been aired to the public considered an illegal download. How are they going to distinguish between them?

Of course it is. Its still copyrighted material.

Isn't it technically illegal to even look at little clips of tvshows on youtube? I'm sure were all guilty of that:o

If an episode has been shown on telly in Ireland, it is still illegal to download it, even if you have paid your t.v. license as far as i know. By that logic, it would also be illegal to tape(or record on a dvd if you've broken through to the dawn of tomorrow)the show as it was being aired. And as far as i know, that is also strictly illegal under Irish law.

The whole mess arises out of the fair usage thing.

On Topic: ISPs will more than likely not enforce this cutting off of service lark, especially for downloaders. A lot of people download music, even if its only a few songs for their iPod. To cut off that much business would be rather detrimental to profits.

Yea thats what I was thinking ISP's will suffer if all the people get banned especially the ones who offer the best connection speeds.. You wont see any regular joe soap getting a 20mb connection for just normal browsing!

My rule is if I download something like music movies etc ill buy it if I like it.:p

Just use a proxy, the web is full of free ones. Good luck tracing you through those.

Besides, most people I know don't bother downloading torrents anymore. They just use certain sites that stream the media to your PC. Or private FTP servers riddled with media that is shared just between friends.
