    why??

I just dont get this. It was okay when you were in school and had no feckin choice but to give something up for holy god for 40 days.

But as an adult I cant fathom people who decide to 'give things up for lent', especially when theres no logical reason. id understand someone cutting down on junk to get healthy but not things like 'oh I am not eating chocolate' or 'I am not drinking at all' - why the totalitarianism??? .

especially when these people are not religious and have not been to a church all year round its mad whats this self punishment for then?

what am I giving up?? nothing...im no quitter!:D

Its the same as making New Years resolutions, IMO. People set themselves a challenge with a concrete time frame (unlike a New Years resolution) and see if they can follow through.

Nothing wrong with that, and if it works out as personal betterment (may be making up words now - sorry Webster) then so much the better.

I dont see how stopping yourself having something for no reason is personal betterment. Im not religious it would be like me giving up chocolate for lent- whats the point? besides it would be dangerous im not nice when theres no chocolate

Its not for no reason, its because they decide to. People make these types of resolutions all year round, not just at Lent. Think they're doing it for no reason as well?

No point if you don't want to. If you do want to, thats the point.

not a religious person, but wanted to see if I could give up crisps. It's the first time i've ever given up anything for lent, so far so good, I'm quite surprised really.

I'm not religious, but I like to give up chocolate for lent because as Aidan said - it's a self test, can I do it? Can I last? and right when creme eggs are out (which I like).
Plus when Easter comes round, you actually enjoy the easter eggs and stuff, whereas the times I don't give up chocolate, it's like 'meeah' when Easter rolls round cuz what's so special about something I've been having every day.

I take it as a test, and get a reward at the end.
It's all personal, each to their own, sometimes I don't give things up. I just like to see if I can, and it does you good sometimes to build up stamina.

Exactly! It's also strangely easier to do something like this during Lent simply because so many other people are trying to stay away from some stuff as well. Also, because it's a topic of conversation, once you've told someone you are giving something up, they are likely to help and encourage you...unless they are posters on AH that is, in which case they may go out of their way to offer you something you've declared they are quitting. :D

    This is a Catholic country!

If you don't give up something for lent the Catholic way of life will gradually seep out of daily life in Ireland, and then the Muslims will take over.

    /joke.

The wife gave up animal fats, caffeine, alcohol and a lot of other processed stuff (white bread, bikkies, etc) recently, and so did I to a great extent.

Result: feel better, lost weight, sh!t conveyor restarted. All round good news. God hasn't contacted me about any brownie points I may have earned. Yet.

<3 other people giving stuff up for lent. It means when someone brings in chocolates into work, there's less people to gobble them down :D
