I have a coouple of quick queries, on applestore.ie there is a refurbished section, and i was looking at a basic macbook for 899. Would anybody have an opinion or experiance with buying the refurbished ones.

I last had a mac with the 1st imac loved it then downgraded to various pc's!! Really want to get a mac but don't have all the money required at the moment to go mental!

Iam not using it for anything major, fooking around on the net and the usual stuff downloading photos off the camera and using itunes.

    So Help?!!

All the Mac laptops I've owned have been from the refurb store and all have been perfect on arrival. I had my MacBook for 18 months and it ran perfectly the entire time and I only sold to to finance my MacBook Pro. Many boardsies have used the refurb store too and I'm sure they'll chime in. As with anything there'll be some bad stories. Very good experience for me anyway. G'luck.

Wo that was quick thank you for your response so quickly. I really want to get this macbook.
Forgot to add to my earlier post, will skype work with the inbuilt webcam? My brother in new york has skype and it'd make the deal even sweeeeeter!

I bought the macbook €899 refurb three weeks ago and it is perfect. I even bought the apple care 3 year plan thing.
after buying this macbook i was thinking to myself, jesus i should have bought my imac (november 2006) refurb instead of brand new.

have bought laptops and ipods off the refurb store over the years and never had any problem, you get the same one year guarantee so you have the same warranty as if you buy a new one. the refurb ones are generally one generation behind what the newest ones on the store are but work fine. typing this from a refurb macbook!!

So no negitive feedback at all?

Found this on adverts, i think i'd be better off spending money on a new(ish) one.

Well my mind is half made up already.
Cannot believe i don't have or find any bad press about the refurb section, thought it was going to be a nightmare.

Although the idea about the US is a good one get my brother to bring it over hmmm. Well i will be getting one for sure now!

    <snip> read the charter please

You'll see that 15" 2.4 2gb 160gb start at $1800(1200 euro). I went up the food chain because I use App Serves on my machine and I also work with SaaS software so Apples show my clients that I think differently so they should too..

Couple of things, use his credit card and make sure the insurance on his card covers internet(they usually do). Only buy from power sellers with $2000 insurance in PayPal (only use Paypal). And get your brother to turn it on when he gets it.

Buy Applecare. Get the serial number of the machine. If you got a friend in Applecare(I have) outlet Ireland or just ring them. He can tell you if it's new or not (I didn't bother doing this). Auction was closing on Sunday night and wasn't waiting until Monday morning...

I bought from HAPS over there so we'll see how come out... Praying everything goes well as my friend is coming back next Wednesday...

Just got my refurbished MacBook yesterday. Looks like new, works wonderfully and it's a higher spec model than the one I was looking at new for the same price and it's black! (the most important thing being the colour of course ;) )

Well i was thinking of getting him to order it on the refurb section of the apple site there, same amount of money will get you a lot better spec laptop, just need to figure out how long i can wait!!

Would the black be worth the extra money though!? i know the white stains but i think i could live with it?

The only difference with refurns, when I worked there, was that was no DOA procedure on Refurbs. I f your brand spanking new PB or iBook stopped working withing the first 14 days, you got a new one. Took about 2 weeks, but you were entitled to brand new. Refurbs had to go for repair. can be some great value, and they are not always a generation behind either. Someone buys a machine and decideds its not what they want they can return it to the AppleStore with 14(16?) days. Apple can't sell it as brand new, so it ends up on refurb. You might get one out of the box with a HD failure or something. Again, repaired, tested and put up on the refurb Store. Some really good bargains can be had.....Thinging about doing this when I go to the US in August, get them to deliver to the hotel when I arrive.
