Is there any easy way to insert a tick (what Americans call a 'check mark') in Mac programs - Word, Eudora, etc?

In Mac Word, you click on Insert on your top toolbar, go to Symbol and you will find a wealth of special symbols that you can use. From here, you can either click on the symbol as needed or you can add a keyboard shortcut for it, if you wish. Alternatively, you can add the Insert Symbol icon to your Word Toolbar and use it that way, if it suits you. √√√

Thanks Ham'n. The symbol on the Insert Symbol list isn't actually a tick - there's an annoying little serif on the end of the hook - but 'twill do.

Try alt-T, but I suspect its the same symbol with the serif (a square root sign).

System Preferences > International > Input Menu then Enable Character Palette.

This will turn on the flag beside the clock on the Finder bar.
Click it > Show Character Palette and select Miscellaneous from the left pane.
Select the character you want, put the cursor where you want it on you document and click the Insert button at the bottom of the window.

I am, Zen, but I can never remember long trails of things I have to do to get a symbol I use once every six months, but use a lot that once. I've put it on a keyboard shortcut in Word, which is a start.

Alt-t does give a kind of a tick, but its upright is vertical, rather than slanted. Hmm.

Then what you need is PopChar. It lives on the top right corner of your screen as a letter 'P'. Just click and select - easy !
