Painting/assembling order?

I've just started to assemble some 40k stuff, a small marine force to try it out, and I've been wondering how people usually paint their armies. I've put together one marine and noticed his arms are covering a good bit of his torso. After looking up some toutrials I've seen some people paint the parts when they're still on the sprue, how do the rest of you do it? I had thought painting them while on the sprue would leave unpainted markes/scratches when you cut them off.

How do most of you paint/assemble your models?

I mainly paint them fully together. Leave off the shoulder pads if you need too.

If you say its blockin a major part, then paint sep. I never paint on the sprue. Think thats just a waste of time.

I generally assemble, then paint. Glue them together, use the GW undercoat spray and then cover anything you've missed with some watered down paint. Seeing as you're going with marines, you can afford to be a little rough when you're blocking in areas of colour, so start with the awkward areas first. What chapter are you going with?

I haven't got a base coat on yet so I'm still open but Crimson Fists are what I'm going for unless something else catches my eye :)

I've a dread half assembled so far and a rhino waiting for the glue along with two squads of marines still on the sprue.

    Go on! Post it! :)

Yeah, looks like it's black for the crimson guys. A can of chaos black is next on my shopping list closely followed by a flat snips to cut out the parts, the less filing I have to do the better.

Painting on the sprue? No thanks....

I usually assemble everything, that includes putting the sand on the base, then spray it Chaos Black.
I find the spray helps cement the sand to the base and saves you having to give it a base coat.

I'm a necron player, I can NEVER decide what to do with my bases. Putting mesh onto them is so much effort.
But usually I assemble mine, then paint them, I get into the hard-to-reach areas with a very small brush, so it works OK.

I was looking at some of the sprays in atlantic a few days ago, there are some where you get a weathered look, cracked paint and the like. I was thinking it might look good as a coat for bases, give it the dry parched earth look you might find on a tomb world. It sounds quick and easy so it must look ****e :D I think I'll still give it a go when the pay check comes in at the end of the month.

For my Eldar Guardians I attached the legs and torso and base and painted that. I left the heads on the sprue for painting as well as the arms - it was worth the effort: theyre gorgeous :)

I think they're around a tenner or a little more, I didn't look at the price much :/ I'll probably get a can a give it a test anyway although I have a feeling the effect the spray gives won't be as noticable on infantray bases :( or it does it with a chemical reaction that melts plastic :D
