Lots of news on the Blu-RaY versus HD-DVD war over the last few days:

    1) A rumour that Dixons/Currys/PC World/Pixmania (all the same company) are dropping HD-DVD. More or less confirmed by the fact that all HD-DVD players have already been removed from all their websites.

    2) Netflix, by far the largest online video rental service in the US is dropping HD-DVD and supporting Blu-Ray only.

    3) Best Buy, the largest consumer electronics retailer in the US is going to recommend Blu-Ray as the winning format ot all it's customers.

Not a good week for HD-DVD.

It gets worse. Walmart just announced they're dropping HD-DVD

And worse still, now Reuters is reporting that Toshiba are going to stop making HD-DVD players this week. It is all over the news outlets on the web, but no official word yet, supposed to be coming next week.

Either way it is looking like the format war is over, which hopefully is a good thing.

Not enitrely true..."Toshiba is now reviewing its strategy on HD-DVD" which basicly means they'll most likely give up but haven't said so yet.

Expect a lot of HD-DVD add-ons for Xbox 360s over on adverts soon :D

That makes me wonder actually, could anyone see a day when sony would licence extrenal blu-ray drives for the xbox ?

Sure next thing you know MS would start licensing Windows to Sony for its PC's.

    You're missing the point.

MS don't make PCs and hence will happily licence windows to Sony, but Sony make the PS3 which is a direct competitor to the Xbox so would they want to retain the advantage of being the only console that can play Blu-ray or accept the fact that some folks are always going to choose an Xbox and try to make money out of that ?

Sorry to be abtruse but you missed my point actually. Sony can no more withhold licensing blu-ray to MS than MS can withhold licensing Windows to Sony. It would breach anti-trust/anti-competition laws the world over.

Microsoft have already 'configured' a blue ray player for use with the XBox 360:

But as they themselves say, it will be up to Sony.

It will be interesting to see what happens with this.

As Blu-Ray isn't owned by Sony, it is owned by the Blu-Ray Disc Association and actually more Pioneer technology is used in Blu-Ray then Sony, Sony has little say in who can and can't use BD.

However why anyone would want to use the 360 as a Blu-Ray player with the hair dryer noise it makes is beyond me.
