    What does your contract say?

If your contract requires a month's notice, then the company can take you to court for breach of contract if you fail to work your notice.

Perhaps you've been given the crap work purely so you won't be starting on anything new and then leaving it halfway through.

No, I had work lined up for the next month and he's switched it all around. He's that type of person

If you have paid sick leave get a cert and stay off. Or if you don't get paid you'd have to make that decision for yourself.

Your manager may want whatever work he had lined up for you to be done by someone he knows will be around to follow up on it/support that work in the future. Makes sense to me.

If you do walk off the job before your time is done the company would have every right to take you to court for breach of contract (if your contract stipulates a 1 month notice period). At the very least they will dock your wages & may even be entitled to claim money back from you.

Regardless of that, it wouldn't be a very fair thing to do would it? If the tables were turned & they gave you, say, 2 weeks notice instead of the 4 weeks that was in a hypothetical, contract you'd probably be on here looking for advice on how to sue them.

You're leaving in less than 20 working days, it's can't be that bad to put up with.

It's not necessarily fair of your boss, but he is your boss. Afraid you have to put up with it.

Yep hes doing it out of spite  had a boss just like that. Luckily I wasn't on any contract so I just left, mine was an extreme nightmare of a person who thought I was dependent on his poxy job though so I wouldn't recommend just leavin for every situation :) particularly not if you need a reference!

I'd agree with the other posters. If you're contract says you have to work a months notice then there's not much you can do apart from calling in sick a lot, which I wouldn't reccomend. People who leave jobs in a huff/act difficult always regret it. Ireland is a small place and many industries are even smaller, it'll always come round to bite you on the ass.

It's only four weeks, just try not to stress out about it or you could do what lots of people do when working their notice do and do a half-assed job!

Depending on the business, you could be doing stuff that you won't be able to f**k with that could help you in the next job. Not sating you would, but I am saying others may, so it wouldn't be worth the risk for your boss.

re:months notice ... My boss gave me the option of either working the month and taking the month off and still get paid for the 4weeks...Was that just his nice character or was his scheming side showing up again?

Aside from having the month off and getting paid before my contract is fully terminated i was wondering what people think they're gaining from this as they had to get someone else in to cover my work therefore paying twice

its beginning to wteck my head now as im trying to figure out what they would give me that option?

also ... What's the story with regards stamps  How do they work and since i'm taking the paid month off how would that affect the 'stamps' ive already collected. Im told you get so many stamps per year fo work but im confused. How can some-one find out how many they have? How can they be claimed back? What do stamps be used for?

You get your 4 weeks, and they know that you won't be able to act the maggot, or cost them money for the 4 weeks (not saying you would, but it's an "if" situation).

My GM encouraged me to work the 4weeks but said that he only wanted to give the option...are they entitled to ive the option as before then i only assumed you had to work out the time no?

Do you honestly think that this company will spend thousands of euro and a lot of time and effort to bring you (one, expendable employee) to court for not working a few weeks of your notice?

It's not that unusual at all, it's commonly known as garden leave. Sometimes it's just easier in the long run than keeping someone for the month when they're clearly in a negative frame of mind, which can rub off on other staff. Also, a company might be worried about intellectual property being taken, customers being poached and all that, so they just call it a day immediately.
