I've been mates with this girl for about over 5 years now, both of us are 17. Every so often when we do be texting each other she ramdonly comes out with "I Love You (my name)", and everytime I stop and think and then reply with "I love you too" not sure in what way she means it. Just there again about 20 minutes ago she texted me saying she loves me.

In the last year we've been getting closer. But I'm not sure how to go about this, how do I find out if she actually loves me or if shes just saying it as lots of girls do.

You just have to take her word for it..Why would she say it if she didn't mean it? And after 5 years I'm sure you've grown on her and she actually does love you.
what do you want her to do to prove it? Climb everst?!

    talk to her.

it depends on how it is said. i sometimes say it to my male friends as in.....ya know i love ya really!

ya need to talk to her though - it might be the best thing to ever happen

Texting is one of the greatest scourges of relationships today.
Since there is no indication as to tone, all sorts of misunderstandings arise. Chuck the phones and talk to each other.

hmm I had this happen before with a girl.. she kept saying it to me and I "fell" in love with her and then when I finally had to courage to really tell her she didnt feel the same! Wasted about 2 years of my young life on her when I could have been off chasing other girls

I honestly think the best thing to do is talk about it.. then again how do you feel about her? Do you actually love her more than a friend or just as friends? Or would you like to be more than friends and then see what happens?

    Agreed.

her she has known you five years. It can mean anything from freinds to more then freinds to a simple term of endearment.

Don't overanalyse. The best way of finding out is if she says it to you. Tone, inflection, look. All are signals that will tell you a lot more than those annoying little texts

You could always send her a text back, something like:

    The I Love You Survey

When you say "I love you" do you mean:

    * Like a cute little puppy
    * Like a Wicklow man with his favourite sheep
    * Like Alicia Silverstone and Matt Damon
    * In a purely platonic way
    * It's just a saying, for fúck's sake
    * You want to spend the rest of your life gazing into my warm blue eyes
