    Hi,

What's the best way to core a few holes in a prestressed concrete slab?

check with supplier that locations and sizes are ok first

then check yellow pages for specialists drillers

I was hoping that I cound rent something that would
do it. Anyone have any experience of doing it themselves?
The iron in it is the problem right?

The was a poster here that hired his own core drill to do this. Van't remember who it was exactly now. Prosporous Dave or GalwayTT maybe, search the live self build thread at the top of the page.

The the steel stressing wires that you need to be careful of

t'was me, any good tool hire shop rents them out 163 & vat per day that includes the diamond coring bits, regarding the wires, i'd check with your supplier & engineer before coring indiscriminately;)

p.s. if you don't mind the dirt and dust involved imho do it yourself
    save yourself a few grand

most importantly check with your plumber regarding the position & rad sizes etc are going to be used, you even need to choose what type of bathroom ware etc is going to be installed even at this early stage.

where possible do the core without disturbing the strands of wire, (before i poured the screed i measured exactly where the strands were)
-if you didn't not to worry, you can check with your supplier to see where they are).

When doing the coring allow sufficient space for insulation to go around the pipes,

check with the sparks but you need to run a separate core for electrics and communications (you don't want to run your power cables and tv through the same ducts (if at all possible)

if doing a laundry chute do the core now for it (not an easy job  )

    any specific questions just ask

I did something very similar when I worked in the US years ago.

Then it was through a post tensioned slab and it was vital not to hit the strands.

We got hold of a scanner from Hilti which allowed us to detect strands and rebar within 150 mm of the surface. Thereafter we moved the core position around a bit to avoid the cable.

I don't know if that machine is available in Ireland. You might have to look around.
