The drive on my PS3 cant read disks any more. Have tried games and a DVD but no joy. Any suggestions? Has this happened to anyone else?

You're not the only one, it seems. Here's a thread from not long ago.

get a cleaning disc and try that, under €10 .
the failure rate is like 0.1% so chance are your not the 1 in a 1000

I rang Sony and they didn't query it just told me to bring it back to Gamestop which I did this morning. The shop manager accepted it straight away without argument and said it was a common problem.
Have since found this thread on playstation.com forum
    http://community.eu.playstation.com/showthread.php?t=171150
So it seems to be common enough.
