advice about projector

I'm thinking of buying a projector, but I don't know much about them.
The rooms in my flat are about 8' wide and have plain matt white walls.
    Questions:
-Is 8' enough distnace to get a decent size picture from a projector?
-Would the matt white walls be ok for projecting the images onto, or do you really need a screen?
-What sort of spec should I look for? I'd imagine that the more expensive ones are for larger images, and that they would require more space to make full use of their capabilities?
-Are there things to look out for - like do some of them buzz noticeably and so on?
-Where is the best place to buy them?
-My laptop has only vga and usb ports (no dvi or hdmi). What sort of image quality would be possible with these?
Any other useful info you might have woul be appreciated also.
    Thanks

I bought a screen as my walls are blue, but even projecting onto a blue wall doesnt look bad, so a white wall should be fine.

I'd go for the hd65 you posted about in another thread and if you cant get some one in the uk to get you one, try cvsmedia.co.uk. Email for best price, you'll probably have to pay over the phone to get that price.

Vga is fine, I have my pc connected to it through vga to watch xvids etc and satellite HDTV. It looks great and cant see hdmi making any difference.
