You can book open returns, but you generally have to use travel agents to book it for you. I'm not aware of any airline that allows that facility on their website.

It is generally VERY expensive to book open returns too.

You can book a return but leave the return date as far in the future as the computer system will allow. Then you are usually allowed one change for free and after that it gets expensive if you keep changing dates. Don't think you can do this online so go to your travel agent.

    thank for that

couple more questions if anyone has the time to answer

looking for a bit of advice, going booking tickets soon, heading in mid august, couple of question
is 1 month enough in thailand and that area enough,
then flying to Cairn in september and spending a few months traveling down the coast to sydney,
gonna be in sydeny for new year,
    what you think,
or would you go to sydeny from bangkok and then up the coast? or is there anything special about been in sydney for the new year.

The reason we were going to go this direction is one of the lads is definetly going home after 6 months and thought it would be nice to be in sydney for the new year

1 month is enough in Thailand but if you plan to see nearby countries like Laos,Cambodia,Vietnam you'll need at least another month.

If I was you, id also fly to cairns and head south. September is a pleasant month to be in cairns/north queensland, not too hot/humid and no dangerous jellyfish in the water. Also sydney can be cool(by aus standards) in september, it will be much warmer when you get there a few months later. And it means you'll be in sydney for new years which is awesome. Theres a great buzz around the city on new years eve building up to the fireworks, thoroughly recommended.

hey thanks for all the replys,
    booked the holiday today, wohoo:D:D:D:D:D:D:D
Flying to bangkok on 17th august.
flying then from singapore to brisbane on 22nd september (tried cairns but all sold out), so we've just over a month to make our own way to singapore.

Can get a flight from brisbane to cairns for $150 dollars thought. so i think we'll spend a few days in brisbane and then head to cairns and work our way back to Sydney
