You could try downloading KisMAC and connecting through that

Is there actually a known problem with eircom routers and Macs? I've heard this so many times. Although I can pick up 3 of my neighbour's eircom networks from my MacBook, strange

My wife's MacBook works fine on our network (Apple APs), but also works seamlessly on both my parents' and her parents' networks (both Eircom Netopia Routers).

To ensure that you are troubleshooting it from scratch, have you checked that you can connect to the Netopia through Ethernet?

    fine here too,

Is your eircom router's wireless channel set to 12 or 13? WiFi hardware in USA can only do channels 1 to 11, so sniff the "air" around (with iStumbler) on your MB and select a free channel which your MB's WiFi can use.
