    Hi,
    I'm considering ditching the landline.
Is anyone using VoIP successfully on the 3 mobile broadband network?

I'm asking specifically about VoIP here and checking out reliability/uptime on the service in general elsewhere.
    thanks in advance

You need good quality low packet loss FIXED internet for VOIP.
So if you ditching land line that leaves very few choices actually.

The "better" fixed Wireless providers, Cable and fibre!

Not Ripwave. It's similar to Mobile 3G in performance

Not 2 way satellite, as delay is bit high. Though otherwise it "works".

How comes Skype works on threes mobile phones but its a devil to use on their BB modems?

    Because it cheats!

It's a special custom service. On the handset there is NO Skype VOIP client. It uses an ordinary 3 voice call to a server that runs the Skype Client and converts the normal 3G digital voice (not VOIP) or GSM digital voice(not 3, but other operators) to Skype VOIP.

It's actually a smart idea as a 3G sector can only support about 5 or 6 VOIP calls but support 100s of native 3G voice calls.

This is also why if you unlock one of these Skype phones it won't do Skype on other networks.
