heard over the weekend that its members have been stung with a hefty levy over the next so man years for their new clubhouse.

    Anyone on here a member?

The figure i heard was 250 per year for the next 7 years or so.

Hollywood Lakes is a members owned club.

The members voted for a new clubhouse, and in doing so they voted for a levy.

Hardly a case of being 'stung' with it?

agreed, how this can be described as 'stung' I dunno. Every club has similar levys for new builds afaik.

If it's a good development then 250 extra for a few years is a really good deal IMO.

Also, I don't know about here but in many cases a portion of the levy, or indeed the usual annual sub is actually a committed spend for the club house bar meaning you pay, say 1k but you have an account with the bar of 300 quid to spend over the year.

I think it's great, especially at new clubs, for promoting atmosphere in the club house and encouraging everyone to at least have a coffee or whatever before/after their round or watch the football - I hate to see members who pull up, change their shoes at the boot of their car and play in the same three ball every week going from the 18th green to the car and home.

Ok, that second point could be off topic but it's similar in the way that bar-spend levies are also some members complain about. I think they're a good idea, much like the afore mentioned 250 quid.

...and with that he's back on topic!

Perhaps stung was the wrong word.

Anyway, how wise is it to spend millions on a new clubhouse at a time when memberships are down? I was speaking to members at Slade Valley and Headfort recently and when i commended them on their excellent clubhouses their responses were along the lines of 'shame nobody uses it' due to drink driving laws etc.

well that could be true, but the members voted for this one. However the memberships for sale in Hollywood lakes seem to be about half the price they were 2 or 3 years ago. So possibly if you didn't agree you have no way out either

I remember looking at the plans when i was up last year and they did look rather grand. Perhaps designed a couple of years ago during the real boom golf years.

Hopefully it works for them as i think the course has real potential. One of most enjoyable courses i've played over here.

Its a great course and was lacking a good clubhouse. The old one was very tired and had to be replaced, it was not worth repairing. With this new clubhouse, the whole package will be on a par with any club in the country, bar the very top level like K-Club, etc.

Members voted for a new one and the levy is less than that quoted above. Certainly members were not 'stung' by levy, but voted in large majority for it.

It is one of the bests courses in North Dublin and very challenging. With the new clubhouse, there will be top class facilities suitable for all members, visitors and societies.

How much are the annual fees here. I have seen people selling membership in the papers lately for around 4500

I've seen a good few people looking to sell their memberships in the papers etc at Holl Lakes over the past 6 months... usually around 2.5k. Would be a full who paid the 5.5k asking price from the club rather than looking to the second hand market.

I didn't think the club allowed its memberships to be traded, but perhaps I'm mistaken.

If that's the case perhaps the club should be looking at newspaper / website ads for members looking to sell them on instead of posting on public forums trying to drum up new members at pretty high prices?

CLG had asked: How much are the annual fees here. I have seen people selling membership in the papers lately for around 4500
I'd earlier googled "Hollywood Lakes" and got hits to both the golf club and this thread. I saw CLG's query and posted the club URL which displays the info prominently. I don't represent the club in any way and have no interest whatsoever in "trying to drum up new members"!!!

I've been a member of Hollywood Lakes since 1999.
We actually had a problem with our old clubhouse in that it was a pre-fab building which, aside from not looking great, became difficult to insure. The new clubhouse was indeed voted for by the members and we pay ~200 for the levy. It opened last September and is fabulous. It is worth the green fee alone to sit out on the balcony after a game and enjoy the view over the 18th from one of the highest points in Nth Co Dublin.

The course itself is a real challenge with fast greens and a great variety of holes, with water on many. Our new practice areas (3 greens) have been laid will open soon. The club competed in the finals of 4 competitions last year, winning 2 of them.

As regards memberships for sale, yes you will find a few for sale, but I'd say this is normal churn. I believe the buyer has to be approved by the club for membership and some portion of the proceeds is taken by the club.

Come up and play sometime. It's about 20 mins from Dublin Airport. I'm sure you'll enjoy it :)

Think it could just be three circular greens in front of the clubhouse? Last time i was up they'd just been seeded.

I think it's 3 chipping greens with bunkers and 1 large putting green beside the clubhouse. I believe June is the target for having them playable, weather permitting.
There are also 2 driving nets.
About 100 yards away across the 1st fairway there is a large open practice area.

Played Hollywood Lakes on Sunday. Course in good condition gnerally but greens have recovered fully from pole-forking and are in fantastic condition - smooth and fast :D
