What kind of money do you hve to spend?
Are you looking for A Slr or a point and shoot?
What will you mainly be using it for?

If you want a Slr you can buy different lense for different subjects for Journalism you would need a wide angle zoom infact when i was working with the photojournalist he was using a 17-85 nd was producing great shots!Im thinking a nikon D40x(you'd want the higher Megapixel in case you have to crop)Or the 400D

If you want a compact you'll have to tell us what you want to shoot as you might not need to buy a very expensize fuji with an 18x zoom when all you might need is six times.

    Thanks!

    hi ricky,
im not sure what i will be shooting yet......

    Ok then ill ask this
You're planning on being a Journalist
and you've chosen photogrpahy aswell in your college course?
What kind of journalism so you want to do?Just Small stories?Or sport's
    or Major front page stories?

I think for the small stories it would be a great idea to have a camera as the photographers will be covering major stories! If you want to cover say a g.a.a games and take pictures to you'll definetly need an Slr but mostly newspaper's who cover sports events will definetly have photographer there. As for major stories you will just strictly stick to journalism they will have a photogrpher there with a 1DmkIII or somethong near to that to ensure the highest quaility image for the front page.Maybe buy a used camera slr off the net like a 350D or nikon d50
heres a few link's to give you an idea of prices
350D with lense and Cf card
Another canon eos 350D from Japan
Its very hard to try and pick out a camera for you as i need to know more about what you need it for and what you'd like to get out of it

no im not planning on being a journalist.

ive done the course before and yes if i want to get back into it again it would be good to be able to take my own photographs.

but thats not the main reason - ive always had an interest in photograpy and would like to pursue it.

what id like to get out of it is some enjoyment but also some good photos! the second link you gave me looks good?

I would say if it's because you have an interest in Photography then go for an slr (and probably a digital one so you can throw out those ruined 'learning' shots!).

Basically pick a budget, up it a little and get the best Canon or Nikon you can afford (no offence to anyone else!)

Oh and edit... if you are going to the next book club meeting I can bring my d80 for you to have a look at, it's probably out of your price range, but it'll give you a good idea of what an SLR can do that a compact can't

    Oh well that ok then!
    Just thought id ask :p
Yeah the second one is good only problem is you might get stung for tax when the camera comes into the country!I think people say if its posted t the north it isnt as likely
But im sure you're not allowed to discuss this on here
Have a look on adverts for 350D or 400D.I got my 20D for less than a new slr off the web(ebay) and im very happy with it.I think your best option would be to go to the next boards meet and have a look at their cameras im sure they'll be more than happy to help you out and put you in the right direction. The problem with that is till then you'll be left without a camera.....

Yeah that would be a very good idea
Chances are speaking to someone in person would be easier than through a forum
And a person running a camera shop would know exactly what you need :D

Really? Any time I went in there to ask them anything they never seemed to know what I was on about, unless the lens was in the store they had faces like they'd never even heard of it. Nice people though.

Well I was happy with them, but then I'm a newbie... so I'm sure I didn't challenge their technical knowledge too much!
