Slow network browsing

This is a problem I've witnessed many times before and the only way I've known how to fix it is a format and reinstall but I'm looking for a better way since my laptop is now doing it:
    • Open My Network Places
    • View workgroup computers
    • Double-click laptop's icon
    • My Network Places window hangs for ~25 seconds then I get the list of shares
If I do it the other way (browse the shares on my PC from my laptop) it works more or less instantly. Any ideas? NetBT is enabled on both machines. I have come across times where an XP Pro PC trying to browse a XP Home PC does it but both are on Pro.

google "master browser toolkit" and enforce a master browser machine in the network, should help.

Vista is a lot faster than XP when it comes to network browsing.
I suspect here the main issue is hostname resolution (DNS).

There's also the famous NTLDMv2 issue, although it usually affects throughput and authentication rather than the populated list of shares.

what happens if you enter \\ip.address.of.share into Internet explorer, does it still take a while to populate?

I'm away for the next few days so can't check for certain but I think it's still slow when I do it that way. I'll have a definitive answer at the weekend.
