So I've been trying to install XP SP2 on my macbook using bootcamp and all has been well except I can't get my macbook to read any CDr's I've made on my windows machine.

So I thought maybe it was down to how it was burned, so since then I've tried two different brands of CDR on my macbook so I can burn the ISO on my macbook but it won;t read it and detect it either

It just attempts about 5 times and then ejects,
However it can read DVDR, DVD and standard bought music CD's without any issues and it also allows me to burn DVDR's

I can't find anything to fix this on the net, I've all latest firmware and software updates but nothings helping :(

The same CDR can be picked up by my windows box and can be written to,

However on my macbook they never appear on desktop and as such I can't get info in system profiler on them
however write strategies for drive are cd-tao, cd-sao, cd-raw, dvd-dao and CD-write is -r -rw.

    I'm stumped regarding this,

What windows software are you using to burn the CD-R ?

Do you know if the session is closed ... that may be a factor.

Edit: if the CD-R can still be written too .. the session must be open.

Can you try closing the session and see if Leopard picks it up then ?

    strange........what brand are they?

trout, I probably didn't help the situation by mentioning XP...ignore it :)

Basically my MacBook can't read/detect or write to a blank CDR or can't read/detect a CDR already burned on another machine but it willl read a standard music CD without issues and it'll also read/write to a DVDR and DVDRW

The brand of CDR is Datawrite and I've also tried another brand but can't remember the make...it wasn't datawrite :)

Mmmm ... I've heard of CD-R's with open sessions that can't be read on OS-X through the Finder, but can be picked up by Toast or similar software.

Don't suppose you have a copy of Toast ?

I'm only harping on about the open/closed sessions as it's tripped me up in the past :)

I have a copy of toast but as I said if I get a blank CDr straight out of the wrapping and put it into my Macbook it won't mount it as a CD and as such won't allow Toast to burn to it, as such its nothing to do with open sessions...

I have had some luck, I've managed to read/burn to a Verbatium CDRW yesterday which finally allowed me to install bootcamp but this still doesn't fix why I can read/write new or already burned CDR's :(

it might be worth trying to flash the drive with the latest firmware for it.....a longshot at best. To me, it sounds like a drive issue and not just a software glitch.

So if I've got this right, you have a Windows XP image that you're trying to burn to a disc ? Why not use the original XP disc ? I hope you're no talking about using an illegal version of XP here on boards are you ???;)

If your version of XP is slightly damaged you can use diskutility to copy it.

there is a BP10 firmware for that drive, but i can't even find a tool to flash the drive. I'd try get a warranty repair on it if you can.

I was thinking that myself, I have another two years of apple care so might as well make use of it :)

Nope, I got CDr's which I'm trying to burn anything onto on my macbook or I'm trying to read already burned CDR's and my macbook just won't :(

    So I've called Apple....

They report no such issues and so no newer firmware other then what I have is availabl,e they also say they've no hjeard of any such issues but yet google shows it is happening as does http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5978135

Also seems to be since Leopard upgrade which fits my situation as I'm sure mine read/write CDR's when I was using Tiger.

There asking me to try on another user account so I'm going to go all out and test everything, I have time machine setup so its a perfect time to test it,

I'm going to install Tiger and test and then go back to Leopard, that rules out pretty much anything on my system as Tiger will be a clear install

    ignore anything about windows

The long and short is, if I put a blank CDR into my macbook it won';t read it, if I put a CDR already burned at any speed opn another machine the macbook won';t read it

Just a thought - did you burn the CDRs (on your windows machine) on a higher SPEED than what the optical drive on your MacBook can "tolerate"?
