Removing Norton?

Hey, so my friend has a copy of Norton Internet Security 2005 on her laptop, it's bankaxed and will not run at all (when you click on it the computer hangs for a few seconds then the program not responding box pops up.

She's not too worried about not being able to use Norton (she's not a big computer person) but the problem is that it is set up to run a virus scan thing of any word document when opened, so it takes her like 5 minutes or more to open any document.

I tried to fix problem, thought it was word (so i updated it) but apparently it's Norton. When I went to uninstall it (norton) it would not let me, the same program not responding thing popped up. I tried downloading the Norton removal tool, but that wouldn't run (said that it was an outdated version and directed me to go to the exact site that i got it from).

I dunno what to do, i've found a few guides that deal with removing norton fully from a system, they involve playing with the registry, but the problem is they all have uninstalling the program through add/remove programs as step 1.

Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers.

Is this the removal tool you were using?

Try running it in safe mode (Tap F8 as your PC boots up)

Had a similar issue before wouldn't uninstall at all, deleted the install folder of Norton and any realted files, then downloaded a freeware registry cleaner that got rid of any rubish reg keys. Removed Norton from startup through msconfig.

Not ideal but worked for me as a last resort, the PC was unusable with the corrupted verson of Norton on it so I had nothing to lose.

Norton can **** up ypu PC to the extent that you won't be able to remove it properly.

The Add remove programs option would be the proper way to remove, but obviously it's corrupt and that option isn't possible.

Have you tried running the removal tool in safe mode.
