ok so i have more than 100gbs of music all very neatly organised by genre album etc.

this is on my 500gb external which when i try to put it into itunes it copies it automatically onto the macbook thus filling up its hard drive completely. also as far as i can tell itunes then organises it into its own folders which makes it very annoying for another programme i use that reads the itunes library.

is there anyway to get itunes to play off my external without it changing any folders or copying anything onto the macbook hard drive?

    thanks in advance

    Preferences > Advanced.
Deselect "Keep iTunes Music Folder Organised" and "Copy Files to iTunes Music Folder when Adding to Library".

Ive heard this problem so many times now from people new to itunes. Another thing to check is to set it to rip cds to mp3 rather than mp4 or ACC. That annoyed me a lot.
