Hope its ok to do this mods.

There are alot of good films nominated each week for Fotw and I find myself wanting to make comments on a bunch of them. However in order to keep the thread manageable people are asked to start a thread to discuss any films they want to talk about but I don't think we need a thread for each film so maybe we can use this thread for some comments on our own picks and the picks of others and if one film starts a really big discussion move it to thread by itself? If no feel free to delete.

This week I nominated The Passion of Joan of Arc. I know it doesn't have a chance in hell of winning but its a film I think everyone should see. Like I said in the Fotw thread its from the 1920s so is silent and in black and white. The film is noted for its direction. Dreyer had a very clear picture in his head of what he wanted. The studio that hired him gave him full control over the production but they thought he was going to make a big action packed film. The year before they had made a film called Napoléon that featured big battles, new [at the time] handheld camera techniques and some really creative direction.

The studio wanted another film in this vain - big and grand and featuring a french icon. When Dreyer arrived he told them he was going to tell the story of Joan of Arc - fantastic the studio said lots of battle scenes. No said Dreyer just the court trail at the end of her life. Thats ok the studio dramatic court scenes are also good. But then Dreyer annouced his plan to firstly cast Renée Jeanne Falconetti as Joan [Falconetti was best know for playing comedic stage roles] and to shot the majority of the film in close up.

BlitzKrieg - Cabaret, ooo good choice I do think for fosse all that jazz is a better film but i get your reasoning that Cabaret is a better known film. Also it is a good musical.

Chad ghostal - The french connection another good choice and kinda goes with User45701 choice of the blues brothers with the car chase.

Empire of the Sun - all time favorite Spielberg movie. Christian Bale was an amazing find for the film [who thankfully didn't go the way of other child stars] and John Malkovich at his best.

Bubs101 - Das Boot classic. the opening and ending shots in that film are amazing. It was one of the first films to show the german side of the war and along with Downfall really shows the complexity of the period.
