Computer Freezing at Scanning Ide Drives...

About 1 in 3 times that I boot up my pc it freezes. Each time it does so it's at the point where It says Scanning Ide Drives... (exactly 3 dots each time).

This seems to be occuring after I disabled some of windows services (that were deemed unnecessary according to some material i was reading).

I did a system point backup before I disabled those services. I'm thinking of doing a system restore but just wondering if it's obvious to anyone what the issue is here before I go and do that.

    Thanks for any help.

why not do the system restore and see does it fix the problem and then disable the services one by one until you find the culprit, oh by the way whats the OS?

Check your drivers, sounds like you need to make sure they're up to date.

Eh? - I take it when you say "Scanning IDE devices", you mean during the POST setup at the begining just as you start up your computer.

Windows has no baring on what goes on out here. Did you do any BIOS setup changes or anything?

What I would do is change the IDE cables, perhaps switch the CD ROMs with the Hard disks and see.
If that doesn't do anything then there could be a chance your HDD is failing - I would run diagnostics on them to be safe.

Cheers. I have tinkered around with the BIOS settings a few times over the past few months. I can't remember offhand what I changed, but I don't think it was anything too major. It could very well be that my Hard Disk is getting old. It's about 5 years old now. I think I'll do a backup and then try the suggestions you made. Thanks for your help. :)

Try resetting your BIOS to original defaults. This should be an option within the BIOS window. Or update your bios . But always worth while doing a backup anyways. Also if it is a Dell hit F12 upon boot up and run the diagnostics.

I think i found the solution to the problem i was having. I had a 3g usb device which has a disk drive. This was connected to a usb hub, the usb hub is a bit flaky for want of a better description. Anyway I decided to disconnect this, since I did that the problem went away. So it was almost definitely related to that. just thought I'd post this in case it helps someone else.
