    I doubt it needs to be re-chipped, the lasers in the PS2's are pretty crap and I would be almost certain that is the problem. You could put a HD into your PS2 and transfer your backups onto that via the network adapter. Haven't done it myself though. Hope this helps.

    Lasers can be around 50 to 60 quid as far as I can remember. It's been a good while since I have fitted one though.
