    Hey guys,

Heading off to america in June for a couple of wks. We've already got our accomodation in Vegas sorted but can't decide where to stay in LA and San Fran anyone got any advice?

Berkeley in San Fran looks good but there doesnt seem to be any cheap hostels that seem half decent.Does anybody know what its like to stay in the city near Union Square? We were looking at the USA hostel there and it looks quite good.

So confused about LA!Heard some dodgy things about the place!Does anybody know if it would be better to stay at Venice Beach or at the USA hostel in Hollywood?

    Any advice would be appreciated!

I would recommend the Green Tortoise in SF, great place right beside Chinatown and a really nice hostel too.

Depends on where you are in LA. Hollywood is pretty dodgy, West Hollywood is miles better. Do not, I repeat DO NOT stay in Banana Bungalow in Hollywood. It's the biggest dive I've EVER seen. It's also called "Vibe Motel" and I'm pretty sure there's a lot of prostitution going on in there. When I checked in, there was a guy in front of me arranging a "private double room with a queen-size bed (absolute necessity) for one night for a film shoot". Hmm. It doesn't have air-con, only a crap fan, and it was 43 degrees where I was there. We couldn't sleep at night because it was just too hot.

However, the Banana Bungalow in West Hollywood is far superior apparently. My friends moved to that one after I'd left. It has air-con and is way nicer.

I stayed in USA hostel in Hollywood. It was pretty decent with plenty of friendly people around. As said in previous post though, Hollywood not the greatest area but always felt ok walking in a group and not too much off the beaten track. But when you first arrive, you will prob get a shock as at first it does all seem extremely dodgy (Hollywood, not USA hostel)
