Ive been reading through the different posts the last few days trying to educate myself a little on what camera to buy but I'm still not sure.

I'm heading to the US in a couple of months and want to get myself a new camera.

Basically I want to be able to take some good photos when i'm travelling.
One thing I'd like is to be able to photograph things in the near distance.

The canon 400d and nikon d40 seemed to be recommended alot.
(although with a $450 budget (exc. any lens purchase), im not sure yet if i'll be to stretch to these)

Do i have to buy a lens with these cameras?
will they take any distance shots with the body alone (excuse my ignorance, I'm totally new to the world of dslr)

also is there any options on getting an international warranty on canon or nikon cameras bought in the US?

are canon still offering the rebate in 2008?
    all advice very grateful
