Up in the attic yesterday and I dug out a paperback - Radio Radio, the history of Independent Local Communtiy and Pirate Radio in Ireland which is a misnomer - its overwhelmingly the story of the Dublin pirate scene in the 70s and 80s which is fine as that where most of the action was.

Reading the stuff about "Captain" Eamon Cooke is a bit icky knowing what we know now but the stuff about Cary, Robinson and the states thick-witted response to the pirates and politicians hypocrisy come election time is pricess reading.

I just checked its availiblity online and if you have money to burn its well worth a read.

    some pix from the book

Q102 and famous Eye in the Sky

    Schools for Pirate radio yay!

Radio Sunshine throws its lot in with FF

    Mike.

    Have to agree,
I used it as my bible a while back for a thesis. If you dont have the cash to buy it, Rathmines library should have a copy. Well worth the read and interesting to see how some bigger named radio presenters started out.

Were you at DIT? What area did your paper cover?

Yeah, I had that book too, at least I think it was that book. Does it have a picture of Eammon Cooke up a tree somewhere ?

I remember doing a project in secondary school about pirate radio and it was a great source of info. And Its selling for nearly 50 Euro now, damn. Last time I saw it, it was in a box ready to go off to the charity shops

I had a copy years ago but loaned it out and, as is the case with "loans", never saw it again.

Anyone know where this can be got now?

Good book if a tad Dublin centric and gets a bit mixed up on technical details.....pity there was never a follow up edition

It was a NCAD degree show project.
I only recently managed to upload it on to youtube.

Not really an update -just a short foreword from Declan Meehan and not a single mention of pirate radio (which is what the book is mainly about) post 1988 which is a big disappointment.

And the text/paragraph structure in parts of the first chapter is badly garbled in my copy.

If anyone has a copy of this book handy, could they please take a quick snap of the interview with Eamonn Cooke and post here if possible?

Apparently he talks about his Irish republican credentials amongst other stuff.

    Cheers!
