Just wondering, how old does a car generally have to be to qualify for Classic insurance from the insurance companies? Is it 25 years, or less?
    Thanks

20 as a rule, sometimes less for rarities.

I'm not sure that insurance companies always need a car to be minimum of x years old, if you're insuring it for an agreed number of miles, e.g. 3000, then they may not be too strict on the car itself being a minimum of 20 or something else.

Also, while your car may be younger than 20, the design itself could be older depending on whether yours is first in the series or last. So this begs the question, when is a classic not a classic ?

Is it classic because the design is older than 20 years or because the car itself is older than 20 years ?

I wondered that, my 325i is 1992 but the E30 3 series ran from around 83, I dont think the insurance companies see mine as a classic yet.

I'm going to try find some limited mileage policy this year, I only covered about 4K in it last year.

I have an '89 635csi that I run on a classic policy. I made my case with the broker regarding the original model and when it arrived to the market and the fact that the six has classic car status in other countries.
I also have three other classics (all from the sixties) with the same broker so I put forward a strong case. Originally they did in fact say no, but eventually came around to it. It makes the ownership of one of these bigger engined cars less painful when you balance out the road tax with the classic insurance policy..

I also have an 89 BMW 635 on a classic policy with Carol Nash.
They had no problems adding it to my existing classic policy on a limited mileage basis (3000) for €260.00 extra.
