Most people doing Multimedia seem to like the course. Iv never heard anything negative, and im nearly sure we have people doing that course on the forum so they might give a better review. :)

That's not witty at all. I mean an entire forum dedicated to wit. I didn't even smirk. Didn't even curl a lip up slightly. Certainly didn't piss myself.

I'm in 2nd year of Multimedia. I like it.. If you're into moderate programming emphasised on designing for mobile phones, web development, scripting, graphics and other media orientated stuff, then it's the course for you.

Alot of people jump in and don't expect there to be programming or maths (although maths is only for first 3 semesters) - so they drop out. Personally, I think the programming aspect is a little basic, but that's only because I have a fair grasp of programming.

I started with 50 people in first year, halfway through second year my class is down to 20. Out of those 20, I'd say 10 will probably graduate from 3rd year.

It's a fun course and you'll like alot of your subjects. You might dislike one or two but overall it's fun. People generally have left because there is alot of CA (continous assessment involved) and they fall behind if they miss too many classes or because they found programming to be too difficult. Don't let it put you off, if you come in and don't miss many classes you'll do fine.

If you've any other questions, just pop me a line and I'll help you if I can.

What career prospects are you looking at - I'll tell you if multimedia is right for you.

Not sure yet, hopefully something in audio engineering/production. It was the digital audio that caught my eye in the prospectus

Hello i'm the same class as dlofnep, if your interested in Audio engineering/Production i doubt this is the course for you. We've done a small amount in it but not as much to make you a sound engineer or anything.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20,759 ✭✭✭✭dlofnep

Decay is right, audio isn't covered overly-indepth. I think another course specialising in audio would be better suited. Multimedia is kind of a jack of all trades, but doesn't focus too much on one subject.

Thanks for the info I am also starting this course. What campus is multimedia taught in? , it's great to hear that there is programming. What languages do they teach, I know html and css like the back of my hand and have basic / intermediate skills with php and asp. (Its just I have this notion I will be held back from furthering these skills and they will be drawing tables in dreamweaver lol) in first year. Is there much focus on animation ? And are the computers decent i.e. good enogh specs . Thanks alot

Multemeida is in the main campus (at least some of it is anyway).. you have some decent enough equipment for the course. Course contents, havent a clue. :)

I started that course a few years ago now, and left after a couple of weeks. If you know html etc like the back of your hand, then you're going to find the course very boring.

In first year you learn basic html, basic photoshop, basic music reading, etc. Everything basic from what I could see. I knew almost everything they were going to teach for the whole year and would have gone mad if I had of stayed.

But thats just me, I get very restless if I'm bored so I just went back and repeated the leaving cert instead, now Im doing Mech. Engineering and love it!

But on the plus side, the equiptment is decent enough and the lecturers are very down to earth. So you should have fun being the best in class :P

More time to go drinkin I suppose!

There's a new course Bsc In Entertainement systems. Where you take a more or less dedicated degree in either music production or games development

Nooooooo thats just what I feared. Hopefully things have progressed since then if anyone can confirm ? Thanks all for the information

The first year of any course is basic. That's generally how it works. As for languages, you'll study java.. For web development, you won't do any dynamic scripting til 3rd year.

It's a good course. Don't be put off by what someone who only spent a few weeks in it thinks. I'm in 3rd year of multimedia and I think it's a good course. Just put the time in, and you'll get alot out. I know some people who didn't put in the effort and couldn't really design sites after 2nd year, and then others who did and can design some really nice stuff.

    It's all about you!

Though, a little off topic but not everybody can design the higher end of the scale designs - I personally find that people who are very artistic and know what colours work and what looks good will get on better then those who don't have much design taste and come up with poorer quality websites.

The development side of thing, anybody can do pretty much.

Both require you to work hard, learn from your mistakes and move on.

Ah yeah, but once you get a grip of how layouts work and can use photoshop effectively - even if you weren't creative before, you become creative.

Hey dlofnep thanks for the information, Its a bit dissapointing to hear there is no dynamic scripting til third year. Is there much emphasis or any on animation ? I feel its too time consuming and have 0 interest in animations going over 30 seconds I know I will like the course and everything with it. I done fetac multimedia (outside waterford) before applying and it was the biggest bore and honestly felt it held me back a lot as I could have been using the time to teach myself. Yeah as for design I cant emphasize enogh practice makes perfect even if your not the arty sketching type at first. Practice along with looking and studying other pros work will bring you up and aware of what works.

You don't do alot of animation. We did some in flash, but like - not anything amazing. Just do what I did.. Code on your own as a hobby as you go along.. And then when things start to pick up in 2nd year, you'll already have a bit of knowledge which will make it easier for you.

What job do you want out of the course dibbly? Like, if it's just web development and what not - obviously, if you're going to be there for the 3 or 4 years, either way it won't matter as you'll learn it all at some point. But if it's something else, I could offer advice.

Yeah definately in the web business anyway.
Couldnt throw myself eitherway to development or design as of yet as I love both.
I also like flash and starting to love video editing also producing print material.
So I feel the multimedia course would be suited, just that I feel first year will be a monotony of tasks.

If you're anyway IT literate, the first year of every IT course is a yawnfest tbh :)

What software do they use and what can I do to prepare going into the course

It might have changed since I did it a few years ago, but the main programming they do is Java and Javascript. If you want to get ahead of the game two good Java books are: Java in 2 Semesters, or Head First Java. For Javascript I recommend maybe doing some of the Lynda.com online courses.

In addition you'll use the Adobe suite: Photoshop, Flash etc.... Everything is thought from the start so you don't need any prior knowledge but if you're bored and you want to get ahead then go for it!

This is the book that applied computiong used for the first semester this year. I'd assume that multimedia used the same http://www.bluej.org/

BlueJ is software not a book and its ****e. Use eclipse from day one. They used to use Eclipse but went back to BlueJ as simpletons couldnt get used to eclipse. Dont be dragged back by people who cant manage eclipse. Tell them you want to use the industry standard rather than BlueJ and they will be happy to hear it.

We actually moved on from it in the second semester.... oddly enough we were using eclipse from day one in a different module... oh the joys. Nonetheless, that is the book they used, its good for a beginner and as I said I'd assume the first part of the course for the new student would require to use it... they're looking to get ahead so it would help them a lot.
