LCD Bright / Dark

    Hi there

    I recently bought a Philips 47" HD LCD (model no 47PFL7642D/05). The picture quality is outstanding and at €930 (luzerntech on ebay) it was a steal.

    <y only problem is that it tends to brighten or darken frequently. It reminds me of when Macrovion would interfere with DVD / SKY. It'll dim when there are dark colour, but if something bright appears, the rest of the screen will brighten to sort of match the level of brightness.

    I wouldn't care if it wasn't that noticeable, but even my non-anal-retentive friends noticed it. it's like someone has their finger on the brightness button.

    I've tried switching on / off digital settings (Contrast Plus etc...) and it doesn't help.

    It's something I noticed happening on my friend's 42 inch Samsung LCD. Is it a common occurrence? Is there any way to change it?

    I'm no expert on LCDs but I think its the backlight auto-dimming, changing to optimise black levels, colour contrast. AFAIK the newer Sony, Samsung also use a similar method.

    Really? it's very distracting! It's a pity there's no way to switch off this optimization. I'd rather have varying quality levels than varying brightness; the former would be far more endurable.

    Or...maybe I'm picky...?:) Anyone else have this issue?

    have you tried turning off active control
    menu->features->active control

    its meant to adjust the picture settings as the picture changes, so might have some effect

    Don't know what way the Philips works, but with the new Sony sets, you can get rid of this auto-dimming by turning PC mode on.
    It's only noticeable on the Sony set if here's a mostly black screen for 4 or so seconds eg. start of end credits. Once the credits start scrolling and there's a lot of white on the screen again, it re-brightens itself to the normal settings.
    Haven't noticed it other than credits though.

    I tried that but unfortunately it doesn't really help.

    Thanks but my TV doesn't have a PC Mode.
