    From some PR blurb:
McDonald's ad to celebrate employees 2008-02-04

McDonald's restaurants in Ireland has today launched a new advertising campaign to celebrate the wide variety of cultures working in McDonald's in Ireland and the positive benefits this brings to their employees and to the company as a whole. Michele Ryan, HR Director says "the idea centres on a view of McDonald's as ethnically diverse, which can sometimes be perceived negatively, but with our campaign we are presenting this as positive and inclusive 'The campaign challenges people to question their perceptions about working at McDonald's and open their minds to working with over 40 different nationalities." The Campaign "Change the Script" conveys the typical routine conversation that exists in modern day Ireland and where the content is rarely questioned. For example the advertisement addresses a mistaken belief that foreign nationals working in McDonald's cannot speak English. We are eager to change these perceptions, tell the facts and celebrate the many benefits a diverse workforce brings our employees and our business. "McDonald's in Ireland employs over 40 different nationalities representing the cultural mix of a new Ireland. We are very proud of our diverse workforce and the sense of community that thrives amongst our employees in restaurants throughout Ireland. We believe our ethnic diversity can act as inspiration for people to embrace the wide variety of cultures in Ireland. We are constantly working towards creating a more inclusive workplace for our people. We have an equal opportunities approach to management and positively recognise and accommodate the individual needs of people from different cultures and traditions. In order to deepen our understanding of managing in a multicultural environment we are sponsoring Phd student Tara Farrell to conduct research into managing in a diverse workplace, English classes are available for our crew and all managers are trained in managing a diverse mix of people. "McDonald's in Ireland has been included within the Top 50 Best Employers for the last three years. What McDonald's employees say is that one of the benefits of working in McDonald's is the opportunity to work with people from different backgrounds, to learn about different cultures and share experiences. In addition to the transferable skills that McDonald's teaches, such as customer service, leadership, teamwork, communication, working in a diverse environment also develops the key skills of flexibility, adaptability and most importantly builds respect for, tolerance of and recognition of differences", concluded Ms Ryan.

    Should be on youtube soon.

I saw it in the cinema today, and to be honest, I was left scratching my head. I understood the change the script bit at the end, but I didn't understand why everyone was shouting at him in the street. I need to see it again.

Its a toughtful advert, but come on does everybody give that much thought to multicultural staffing when they order their big yack and flies ?, it's a bit dumb but will it sell more fast food or get more people jobs ??

    stupid ad tbh

working with other nationalities is fine, but "do they even speak English" is a legitimate question in reference to McDonalds employees

my local McDonalds employs about three fluent English speakers and it gets very frustrating trying to order my Big Mac and shake

I don't blame the employees, of course they take work where it's offered.
But for McDonalds to make an ad bragging about hiring so many foreign people? it really bugs me

McDonalds is one place I've never struggled to order. It's a limited menu. There's only so many things you can ask for! It's not like the staff need to interact all that much with you.

I highly doubt to many foreigners working ther would struggle with an order for a Big Mac (same name in many countries anyway!) and a shake. Did you ask for your burger well done or medium rare or something. You know you can't do that there :D

they have pix on the BIG menu's
Unless stevie is serving then you rightly F***** :D

Brutal ad. As in if it's purpose is to try get me to go to McDonald's I wouldn't.

Show me a big mac and twisty fries and i'll go!

I thought it was pretty obvious it was a recruitment advert.

Well it doesn't give me any desire to work for them either.

Why are McDonald's making these kind of ads anyway? Are they short of staff or just short of English speaking staff?

It seems to me that they are trying to guilt people into wanting to work there.

I get a kind of "Why wouldn't you want to work for us unless your racist?" vibe from the ad anyway.

    Racialist! :D

Seriously, I think you're reading too much into it. McDonalds advertising has recently been able to take itself less seriously. They acknowledge the stereotypes that people apply to micky d's employees and they say, hey, "so what?!"

I asked for it plain, which is a pretty common request

also I wanted a medium big mac and a large chocolate shake
I got a medium vanilla and a Big Mac with everything on it
    I hate vanilla

and everything in McDonalds is well done
    VERY well done

a mistaken belief that foreign nationals working in McDonald's cannot speak English
    really?
English classes are available for our crew
    whats with the lessons?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,049 ✭✭✭✭murphaph

Lots of firms employeeing professionals pay to enhance the english language skills of their foreign workers here. I'm impressed if McDonald's spends money on it tbh. I wouldn't have imagined they were in that category of employer.

People should put themselves in the shoes of a McDonalds manager for a moment.....I don't work for them but I work in retail and I can tell you that we get 20 or 30 foreign CVs for every irish one (and they always seem to be from 16 year olds on break from school).

Irish people generally do not want to work in retail and I assume McDonald's encounters the same problems in recruiting them.

Nothing against foreign nationals living and working here, paddy's do and have done the same all over the world, but Irish speak English and the majority go working in English speaking countries.
Employing people with bad English will make businesses in Ireland suffer eventually.
How annoying is it to have to repeat and explain what you are looking for in a shop, hotel, restaurant, pub, club or indeed on the phone, Irish people have patience but these patience run thin causing the consumer to go elsewhere because its basically a pain in the A*** to try converse with someone who does not understand what you are talking about!

HaHaHa thats brilliant! "You don't work at mcDonalds, what are you racist???"

Anyway its a crap ad. I get it and understand what its trying to do but I just find it really annoying.

OP any chance you might work at mcDonalds???? Otherwise I cannot see why you think its a good ad
