Worried about going on the Pill for the first time

I've decided to go on the Pill for the first time but I'm a bit worried about how to approach the subject and what to expect. I mean I know I go to my doctor and say "I want to go on the Pill", but then what? what kind of questions will he ask me? is there any type of medical examination involved (as in....down there?), blood tests etc? it's probably a stupid concern but I'm just a bit nervous. any help is appreciated! :)

They don't check "down there" but you should get a smear test done once a year as soon as you become sexually active.

They'll check your blood pressure and ask you about your diet and lifestyle.

Most people start on a low dosage Pill first and see how they get on with that.

they'll check your blood pressure, weight, the usual sort of general check up stuff

will ask about your periods - are they light, heavy, frequent, infrequent?
do you suffer from bad PMT?
what kind of PMT? headaches, nausea, bad cramps etc

Nothing to worry about at all!!

I also had a breast check both times I started on the pill. Only took about 1 minute. He asked questions about any breast cancer in my family too.

+1, also they were very keen to know if I was a smoker, as they said smoking+pill=higher risk of blood clots. They also asked was I sexually active, which I was, so the doc did a pregnancy test before filling out the script for the pill, it was standard procedure tho, so if they ask you this don't freak out! They'll also take your blood pressure and ask you some general questions about your lifestyle, any medical conditions that you have and if there's a history of any diseases in your family. It's nothing to worry about.:)

Once you go on the pill, make sure to go back to the doc if you have any unexpected symptoms, such as light-headedness or headaches.

Also, (and I don't mean to be pointing out the obvious here) but read the information booklet thoroughly, there's lots of important info there, and if you've read it properly you'll remember it if you need it and can't find the book. ie if you're away and miss a pill you'll know what to do.

It doesn't hurt to point out the obvious sometimes. About one or two threads a month here are clearly by people who haven't read the leaflet.

they will ask you the reason, ie. is it for control of your periods or for contraception.

they will take your blood pressure and ask about the general details of your cylce etc.

they will then give you a 3mth perscription for whichever brand they decide on, just to see of it suits you(after that you will get 6mth perscripitons)

    Hope that was heplful!

Though it hasn't happened to me alot of people change brands when they first go on a pill, each brand has a different dose of the hormone so if you noticed any changes in your mood or body say it to your gp. It can take a while to find a brand that suits you.

+1 Make sure somebody who knows you know you're on the pill. Different brands really do affect different people differently, so make sure that person can tell you if you've become more anxious/irritable...... you may not notice it yourself
