Cat socialisation Q.

My cat - well one of our cats basically lives indoors now most of the time. 50000000000000 - oops sorry she typed that.

I am just wondering if its a bad idea to keep this cat indoors all the time and away from the other cats. Don't cats need to socialize like dogs.

She is neutered and seems quite happy snoozing insid#e eating and generally wrecking stuff.*-9++.

Its been a struggle to even type this.

:D:D I know the feeling - I have one furry friend on my belly and one on my knee as I type this!

I would think your cat is probably fine as long as she gets attention from you & your family. There are lots of single cat households. In fact she probably likes being "special"!

I recomend putting your cat in a cattery to get it socialised, they won't mix but at least she will know that shes a cat! And you won't feel guilty when you go away, I use xxxxxxxxxxxx for mine. They keep chickens infront of the cattery to keep them amused they love it and I don't feel guilty!

    Korky:cool:

I have never heard of putting a cat in a cattery for socialisation! Sounds ridiculous to me. Cats do not like having their routine upset and she will be too worried about being out of her own space for it to have any positive affect.

It's one thing to put the cat in the cattery when you have to cause you're going on holidays, why do it unnecessarily? I always get someone to come and stay in the house while I'm away, but the I'm lucky to have that available to me.

Hey Korky, do you own this cattery or something? You seem to be pushing it on any thread you possibly can :D

No just out sick at mo and no one home so I can spend the day on the net for a change, I'm just interested in what people are doing with thier pets.. first time on, I don't get time off.. and as much it pains me i'm going to enjoy it before everyone comes home and the house is back to chaos. Sorry if you don't agree with the socilisation thing but some cat's need it! And if you can find a place that the cat likes it a god send. I am entiled to my opinion surley, is that not what these are all about. Some people don't even know that there is such things as "cattery's" as opposed to puting their pet in kennels.. So I put up my recomdations as I am sure would you if you had found somewhere good! Regards

No need to get defensive. I have given my reasons why I don't think it sensible or particularly good for the animal. Perhaps you could give us you reasoning as to why it actually works, there may be something in it that I haven't thought of. But from what I know of cats - which I would consider somewhat more than average - it doesn't sound like the best idea.

It struck me as somewhat sly advertising considering every post you have made you have mentioned this place, even in threads where someone has said they hate cats and would never keep one. Yes I tell people when I find somewhere good but not in this fashion. I would hate to see what I consider inacurate advise being given out in the cause of advertising.

OP -cats aren't like dogs in their need for socialisation (I have 9 indoor cats, I get to watch lots of feline interaction) so if your cat is happy snoozing in the house leave her be.

One of mine likes to escape to the non cat part of the house (where the rodents are) at any given opportunity and spends hours asleep tucked up in a wardrobe. She ignores the rodents and just chills away from the other cats. Ideally we'd find her a home with no other cats but she has people issues so most prospective homes are put off.

Two of the others insist on sleeping on the bed with me routinely whereas if I let the rest in they'd all feck off after about an hour to "their" spots.

Sticking a cat in a cattery for socialisation is imo cruel. If you want to go on holiday or are getting work done in your house then a cattery is a godsend but don't upset your cats routine just because you think it needs socialisation. If the cat wants to meet other cats it'll make the effort. I don't know if you've noticed yet but most cats aren't into effort :D

My one used to try to get out every oppurtunity avalible but pretty much stayed in doors most of the time the last few months, only went out to do her buisness and follow the old fella around when he was gardening.

Ours are odd, sometimes they're out for hours and sometimes they're barely out long enough to do the business

They mostly sleep alone but sometimes we're greeted with this:
