Just got my new DualShock3 today,
Just wanted to give you a heads up on this technological marvel.

It adds, wait for this, a rumble style force feedback to the PS3 sixaxis, amazing, no?

Now, I popped in Motorstorm, but it refused to dl the update needed to activate the rumble feature, so after that I gave Ratchet and Clank and GT5 Prologue a whirl.
R&C seemed good, but at times you'd be hard pressed to notice the difference, the rumble effect is quite slight, perhaps to save the internal battery?
On GT5Prologue it's far more convincing, conveying the sensation of off course excursions and of tyre grip slipping away.

I didn't try any PS2 games as yet, but I see online that they are yet to have the rumble feature supported, which is odd.

Really, so far, the biggest improvement of the DualShock 3 over a standard Sixaxis is the weight.
There is a better "heft" to the DualShock 3, it feels far better in the hands, while the original Sixaxis always felt far far to light.

The DualShock 3 I bought was obtained from eBay and it set me back around €60 including postage, which is pretty much what they'll cost here, whenever Sony get around to releasing it in the Euro territories.

They should have released this ages ago. I got mine off ebay too, seeing as Sony are taking their sweet time releasing it here. The rumble effect is quite strong with DMC4 by the way.

i honestly cant see myself paying €60 for a controller unless its something like a decent arcade style jobbie with a stick

I think I must be crazy or something but I seriously do not understand the appeal of rumble. I couldn't care less if it's there or not.

    Yep, you're crazy ;)

I find it helps with the whole immersion aspect...

Rumble is a nice feature, but I wouldn't go out of my way to have it. I actually don't mind the sixaxis. It's light, but I got used to it overnight. My biggest gripe is the two foot cable that comes with it to connect to the PS3. Sitting that close to a 40" screen is not healthy!!!

just dont use it plugged in so, charge it up when youre not playing the ps3 and unplug it when you are

I love the way that one of the pro-PS3 arguments back when it launched was that, unlike the €700 price tag, the peripherals were cheap...
Who in their right mind would pay €60 for a controller:p (apart from all of you guys of course, mad as a box of sparrows the lot of you!)

Yeah. That's the usual line one hears about the benefits of rumble. But most of the time I find it's the opposite. The fidelity between a rumbling controller and the feeling of shooting a gun/ punching someone/ whatever is pretty poor. I always found it just alerted me to the fact that I was holding a controller which otherwise I was pretty used to and could forget about.

The only time I found them any good was for driving games as it's quite similar to the vibration of clutching a steering wheel.

Got mine yesterday for €50 from CDWOW. A fair bit heavier than the Sixaxis, and the ruble feels great on F1, DMC4 and Prologue. The exttra weight makes it feel much better in the hand. Must try it out on Warhawk when I get a minute.

i'd like it for gran turismo alright. I always found it helped me know if I was taking a good line or when I would start to lose grip etc, but unless I'm desperately in need of a spare controller and see one for 10 or 20 more than the standard,I won't be bothering.

You do realise that it's wireless, right?! The cables only for charging it, if the batteries full then there's absolutely no need for it!

Regarding the Dualshock, looking forward to getting one although Sony should have released this a fcking age ago.

Ah, come on, I'm not that stupid! (-ish). But the battery has a nasty tendency to run out in the middle of a game, resulting in me having to run around liek a headless chicken to find the cable and plug it in before I get killed.

How long are you playing for? Seriously... I go weeks without recharging mine. Now i do not play it all the time... However i could easily play 6 or 7 hours without needing to plug in. Then just (assuming you have one) quickly switch to a second controller.

dont all games pause when the controller disconnects anyway?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 300 ✭✭superweld

it usually flashes a message on the screen saying the battery is running low so then you can pause the game and swap controller or plug in

You can also play the PS3 using the pad wirelessly, while at the same time having it plugged into a laptop next to you and charging as you play - that's what I do.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 201 ✭✭Mcloke

I like both the weight and rumble of the dualshock 3. Also the battery lasts a lot longer I find....I guess because it needs the extra strenght for rumbling :)
Your paying a lot more than they cost...a friend who is in Japan sent me two black controllers for €70 (inc P+P) but I guess thats the luck of having a friend in Japan :)

I have only 4 physical games in my collection for the PS3 at the mo, and of them Motorstorm needed a major update to work, and even then it's not as intense a rumble feature as it could be, I also endured a 45 min download for an 11mb update to COD4, and still no rumble, if there is rumble in Assasins Creed I must have missed it and Ratchet and Clank, well there the rumble feels pretty good actually.
At least GT5Prologue feels spot on,
although, as said before it seems like Sony are holding the rumble effect back for fear of draining the battery.

Can't say I'm overly bothered, I've two pads at the moment, if I wanted to get another I might consider getting dualshock 3, but I wouldn't pay mad money for it.

I got myself a 3 metre usb extension cable, pretty damn handy for whenever you want to charge while playing...
Think it cost less than €1 in a recent order with SVP...

I use a USB repeater i bought so i don't have to move my external hard drive between my PC/PS3/360. That also doubles as a charge cable extender (15 metres! overkill or what!)

:eek:What kind of connection are you running? I've up to 8Mb,( in reality about 5Mb) broadband and my 11 Mb download was completed in less than 15 seconds!!

As for rumble, I like the feature a lot! I played the PS2 a little bit (didn't own one) and was always impressed by rumble. I probably will buy one of these controllers but I'll wait a while! Here's hoping all future games will make use of the rumble feature and that it can be turned on or off in the options screen!

Talk to my brother, he set up my wireless network and used some mysterious esoteric method, rendering it usable but seems to drag the signal through who knows what realms of dark evil, dropping the speed rather drastically, in fact, I have to yank the ethernet cable out of my 360, a long story, and used that on the PS3, bumping up speeds considerably, the Resistance patch took about 10 minutes to download.

So does the rumble on this controller work on COD4?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,332 ✭✭✭311

Sorry for bumping this thread ,but I can't find a dualshock 3 listed anywhere.
After playing gran turismo ,the only thing missing from it is that controller I think.

I was offered one in game with GT5P for just 25euro which wasnt bad

It's definately worth it. Sony really dropped the ball by not including it in the first place.

Just looked on that site, should I be concerned that the Thawte link at the bottom of the page says "invalid certificate" with a link to why.

I presume you didn't get stung for Customs duty?

The more I play with the Dualshock 3 the more I like it, it definitely fixes the lack of heft of the Sixaxis.
I got mine with ease on ebay, and don't pay any more than €50 with shipping.

Pity RidgeRacer7 won't rumble though, the dev team has been dispersed within Namco so it's unlikely to get such an update, ho hum.
