Make sure you get a regulated power supply.

I went for a cheap variable converter and may have fried my iRiver H140

I would suggest going with another OEM charger, or maybe they have forums on the manufacturers site that might recommend something ?

Depending where you are Peats or Maplin are a good bet. There is a list of stores at the bottom of the page on the maplin site.

You can get these adaptors most places, including the € store for €2, but I wouldn't trust the adaptor on your i-river. Best go to Maplin/Peats and bring the old adaptor with you.
