SMS issue with Three

My friend is with Three, joined them just couple of weeks ago. And he kept his 087 number of course.

Now the problem is that he can not receive messages from Vodafone mobiles or irish landlines. However there's no problem getting messages from o2 or three.
He spent over 2 hours with cust care between 3 calls to them. Nope. Useless.

Anyone else experiencing the same problem?

I had problems where people on other networks could not call my 3 number. 3 refused to acknowledge any problem. The only solution was to port back to Vodafone. Never looked back.

Can he terminate the contract with Three on basis that they can not provide appropriate service?
If so what's happenning with the mobile phone itself which he bought just 3 weeks ago?

Yes he can but 3 will not allow it without payment for the remaining 11 months. Easiest option would be to port to another network, that way he would not need to speak to 3 at all. 3 will then send him a bill and he can challenge them.

that sounds like the best solution tbh, except i think he should tell 3 he's going to do it first and if they mention a cancellation charge he should explain that they're in breach of contract because they can't fix the problem.

it'll probably take about a week because they'll keep telling him to wait 24 hours but if he just ports and doesn't give them a chance to fix it they might have a case in making him pay the fee

Fair enough, I would give them one last chance to fix it, then advise them of their breach of contract. If they don't resovle the problem then go ahead and port to another network.

When I had my problem with them (calls from other networks not coming thru) , I called them several times but each time they denied any issue existed and said to switch off the phone and remove and clean the sim card.

I got fed up and simply ported back to vodafone and I never looked back.

What does "port back" mean? To be honest I've never heard about this option.

It means moving the number to another network or going back to the original network eg Vodafone. Basically you cease to be on 3.

he means to bring your number back to whatever network it was on before thereby joining a network that can and will fix problems instead of apologising and telling you to wait in the hopes it'll fix itself

That's fine. But the contract is still with Three. Or you pay Vodafone and they pay Three. A bit confused on money/contract/rental side...

You would be telling 3 to shove their contract where the sun don't shine. I did it when I had problems and they never chased me for the money, I told them I would not pay for a service they could not provide. Vodafone were more than happy to take my money.

Right, that's clear. Do Three get back your handset you've purchased when signed up?

it would be better if you gave it back
