No More Heroes in No GORE Heroes Shocker!

I heard that the PAL version of No More Heroes has "black clouds of despair" instead of blood when you kill enemies, be this true? As much as I loved Killer7 and was mightily looking forward to Suda 51's next game, I'm shallow enough to let this stop me from buying another cult classic. Reeks of knee-jerk reaction to the manhunt 2 fiasco...*fume*

Well the japanese version doesn't have any blood either and the PAL release is a conversion of that. The US version by Ubisoft has Blood in it. I was a bit upset by this but I heard the lack of blood isn't an issue and the black clouds do suit the graphical style of the game.

was the Japanese version censored to start off with? I know they have very strict censorship laws when it comes to violence in games.
Or was that how they'd originally intended to release the game? Just whacking up the violence a notch so it would sell in America.

I think it was originally going to be gorey, but Suda51 left it out, and apparently it was put in for the American market...

Correct. The original has the black stuff floating around instead of blood, they changed it to blood for the American release

This isn't like the German censorship of RE4 at all.

Bloody clown. And not in the affectionate DamoElDiablo avatar way...

Why? For not putting unnecessary gore in it?

I remember how crap Prince of Persia:Warrior Within was when they decided to add a bunch of gore for no reason. Luckily it could be turned off.

Well, No More Heroes is a very different game to that, and I think the gore suits the game (it's over the top).

    Here's a comparison:

Some spoiler of course, so if you're avoiding videos, don't click (it's a death scene).

+1. The OTT gore was to be, from my understanding, part of the comedy, not brutal gore just included for upping sales rates. Sure at the start, didn't Suda51 say, albeit slightly tongue in cheek, that he was aiming to make the game more violent than manhunt 2?

Somehow I think the crapness of PoP:WW had little to do with the inclusion of gore.

Just looked at a few videos and I really didn't realise how bad the censorship was. It's painfully obvious that the original version was meant to have gore since many of the cutscenes have camera angles which just don't work without the gore. However the main offender is in the actual normal combat were it looks very boring compared to the uncensored version. In the uncensored version there are animations were you impale victims and rip them to pieces and other such nastiness which are now replaced by a standard death animation or the black cloud that really takes away from the style of the game. Time to get the wii chipped I think.

Unfortunately from what I've heard, a lot of games still don't work on chipped Wiis, I think No More Heroes might though. I've been tempted to either chip mine or get a US one at some point, generally because of the stupid European release delays, but it'd also mean I could get the other NMH.

No More Heroes is one of the Wii titles that will only work on an NTSC Wii, chipped or not.
In fact the best thing to do is this type of deplorable behaviour is your bag, get an early Wii and chip that, the early internal structure is easier to work with, I heard it said, somewhere, maybe....

Feel free to delete this post mods, and please don't ban me for the above, please!?!?

Will it definately not work on a PAL chipped Wii though?

I gotta admit, the gore version looks a hell of a lot better! I thought the other version simply wouldn't have the blood, but I didn't realise how much had been cut out of the animations (pardon the pun)

I suppose if you want realistic violence, Suda 51s output is not the place to go, none the less Killer 7 was pretty gross out none the less.
I can't wait for this one though, and the thing is, unless we, the consumer, buy them, then we will have no one to blame for a never ending stream of minigame compilations, lets not see this developer go the way of Clover.
And Okami for the Wii as well, so few bought the PS2 original, I'll be first to buy that too, an awesome game, and one of the most beautiful too.

Censorship or not, I'm definitely buying NMH. European release delays piss me off to no end, I'd considered getting an NTSC Wii before too. If I end up doing that, I'll just get it again :)

For what it's worth, Suda51 (<3) feels the US version is closest to his vision

watched the video and i am p*ssed...i love bloody stuffs but gore is not really that important for a game, unless, it give you a huge difference!!that boss die in a completely different way!!!

edit:god,i cant resist to look into more videos....then i am now seriously thinking to get a US version,i really looking forward for this game and i am not gonna ruin my experience with that stupid censored version

NMH has supposedly sold 100k in the US and 160k pre-orders in Europe (wtf!)

Haven't pre-ordered it myself, never pre-order these days and never have any problems picking up games I want. So get your wallets ready people, and buy buy buy :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,123 ✭✭✭✭Star Lord

I want it... but since you posted that comparison I want the ruby red goretastic version!!! :(

Afraid I'll have to wait until the "Carmageddon Effect" comes into play until I'll buy it...

Damnit... Almost tempted to cancel my preorder after watching that comparison vid...
I'm not usually a fan of gore in games, for the most part it's pointless (especially when overdone ala soldier of fortune) This kind of stylised gore does actually look like it adds to the game though:(

I canceled my pre-order after seeing the comparison vids. This isnt like carmageddon where the basic experience wasnt hugely affected by the difference between green and red zombie blood. The crude censorship in NMH, particularly in the cut-scenes is so blindingly obvious and poorly done that I find it offensive.
