I'm thinking of upgrading from my current Powerbook G4. I'm dithering between getting a Macbook or a Macbook Pro. Advice?

Bit of a price leap for the pro , what is your intended use? Graphics , Audio or just general use? Bit more info would help in advising ya I guess. I got a refurb MBP and am alarming enamoured with it.

Fairly general statement. What's your intended use for the laptop?

For internet, word processing, email, IM, music playback, light to medium photo/video editing, mobility : MacBook

For heavy photo/video/audio editing, bigger workspace, style () :MacBook Pro

That's just my opinion anyway, I'd personally wait a bit before buying a new MBP as I wouldn't be surprised if there was going to be an update in the next 3/4 months or less.

It will be my only computer, used for my work (writing) and also for entertainment (while I have a decent radio and CD player, the remaining TV will, I hope, be gone by then - want a TV, anyone?)

I'll watch DVDs on it, but won't be doing any video editing or any of that class of carry-on.

I was more or less set on the Blackbook - I don't mind paying extra for the beauty, or rather, I do mind but what the hell. But my PowerBook G4 is just so stable and generally wonderful that I suddenly got worried that maybe I should buy its equivalent, which would be a Pro.

On the other hand, it seems to be awfully dear, and the extra bucks don't seem to buy a notable amount of extra bang.

Well if it's only for entertainment etc. the MacBook will do just fine tho you may be used to having the larger screenwith your PowerBook.

Devil and the deep blue sea. I'm buying abroad (I'll pay the VAT anyway; this is a work machine - but even with the VAT, it's a lot cheaper abroad).

Hmm. I wonder will the Macbook prices drop enough in Ireland after a new Macbook Pro - or, indeed, will the older Macbook Pro prices drop enough in Ireland - that it would be worth waiting and buying at home.

I don't think the macbook prices will drop at all. You might get an old mbp but that's only left over stock in a shop. Apple usually just replace their products straight away. So I wouldnt count on either

You're right, of course. Apple are great at panting anticipation, but in reality I'm probably best to consider what I need now and for the next four or five years, and go for that.

I'm edging towards the Macbook. The only reason i can see for getting a Pro is the graphics processor, which means that it's a lot lighter on system resources if you do decide to use an external screen. But really, I'm not that cracked on using external screens.
