Strange Problem

    Hi all,

I recentley bought a Netgear router rangemax series and a netgear adapter for my laptop. The router is connected to my desktop PC.

For some reason my adapter keeps dropping off the network when I browse the internet. I do a ping -t to the router, to the adapter and to google. It keps pinging away fine to all 3 and the times are all relatively ok. When I try to browse using firefox or IE the connection drops after about a minute and I get an error on the cmd console that 'request has timed out' and 'Hardware Error'.

The card can no longer find any wireless networks and I have the remove the card. When I re insert the card it picks up the network again and works fine till I browse and then it cuts off again. I tried connecting to another wirless network in the area and I could browse for a longer time of a bout 15 minutes before it cut off with the same problem. The ping to the router and internet was lost on all occassions but the ping to the card remained fine. I tried using Netgears own sofware and I tried using the windows xp config but there was no change.

The firmware is up to date on both the router and the adapter. I have tried changing the channel and speed and enabled and disabled security settings but still no change. I powered off the router and reinstalled it with factory defaults .. I uninstalled and reinstalled the adapter drivers but to no avail.

Im starting to think that the adapter must be faulty. When I connect the laptop to the router with a cable it works fine also.

My desktop is running Vista (all updates) and my laptop is running XP Pro SP2 with all updates. There is no spyware on the laptop as I did a complete rebuild on it this week.

    Cheers
