So with the first teaser playing with Cloverfield, what are people going to make of this?

I myself am not sure, while I am a fan of Star Trek and personally loved 'Enterprise', I think it will be difficult to make this era of Star Trek 'realistic' while sticking true to what came before.
Also, it seems that all J.J. Abrams stuff is all love/hate.

    What do others think?

Also, did anyone else see the teaser and expect a Rammstein video?

    hrm

tbh I'm so floored by the fact that you liked enterprise I'm not sure what else to say

you didn't like voyager too did you?

Voyager I liked because it created a whole new scope for Star Trek, it went back to the tradition of exploring strange new worlds, seeking out new life and new civilizations etc..
Eventually it went down the can though.

And Enterprise was awesome, it added a really cool realistic element to the series and had some of the best story arcs ever.

    Hmm not sure about that!

I'm personally not excited at all - think a re-imagining is not a good idea a la BSG and even though JJ is very talented I'm just not excited about this film.

At the time i liked TNG the best however I've since re-discovered DS9 on DVD and it really has aged very well unlike TNG.

IMHO DS9 was without doubt the best of the series - great characters and relationships aswell as exciting arcs, was also the most "un-trek" like show but there ya go, it had alot of what made Firefly so popular and i love watching the shows on DVD, especially season 4 onwards

    Yeah, DS9 was great.

ds9 was great but it's lacking a certain something that the next generation had, a bald frenchman with an english accent.

    class, pure class.

    No it had Shaft.
    Shaft in space.

    Ds9 = the win

Ds9 had an alien james bond in space.

Looking at the cast so far I think its a promising film

sorry no, the next generation is the best series by a mile

DS9 and voyager are like star trek lite

just to stay on topic, I'm not looking forward to the film

I'd seen the trailer online, but I was really hoping to see it in the big screen before Cloverfield. Sadly, it was missing fromt their trailer line-up!!! Stupid Savoy

I'm not quite sure how this re-imagining will go. I would have gladly accepted a new story with new characters in the same universe, but it will be tricky to get the old characters right, considering we've been watching the same actors play them for 40 years. At this stage, it feels like those actors OWN those characters, dont ya think?

Still, I've got faith that JJ will produce something thats at least more watchable than the last two Trek films and I've been without my Trek fix for FAR too long at this stage :p

And I have to agree with Phasers above, TNG will always be the Trek show for me, but thats prolly just cause it was the show I grew up watching. Everything after it paled in comparison!!!

Well i dont know, i have been worried as you said that some of the actors might not be able to pull off the roles but tbh i have no ****ing clue i watched tos when i was very very young like 4 or something, not that i knew what was going on in star trek at 4 but just to give you an idea of how much trek ive watched...
I think that Quintro looks the part of spock and the actor will have no trouble pulling off those simple manurasims

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,216 ✭✭✭Kur4mA

I personally can't wait for it. Quinto is gonna rock playing Spock... oh lawl I madez a rhyme. :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,892 ✭✭✭madrab

    looking forward to it alright

(loved thg & tos, voyager was god ds9 was a bit meh & enterprise had some good moments & story arcs)

DS9 was boring as hell, tng ftw

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,626 ✭✭✭Stargal

Cannot wait for the film - although was I the only one who thought the new ship looked a bit crap in the teaser trailer?

I think DS9 lost a lot of people cos of its more complex story arcs; with TNG you could always drop in in the middle of a series and still know what was going on, but not always the case for DS9.

Plus TNG was just, you know, better ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,892 ✭✭✭madrab

hey im all for story arcs, the more complex the better. But i still think ds9 was meh

I like the ship in the trailer, the only thing i dont like is the fact that its set a few hundred years in the future, surely there would be robots doing the building.

I think DS9 took a while to get going. I'm watching them again and have to say it's slow going up until the second half of series 2. It really kicks off in S3 and S4. I loved both DS9 and TNG it's hard too chose.

TNG is probably more Star Trek but DS9 is probably more hard edged Sci Fi

DS9 always reminded me of a Sci-Fi version of Coronation Street. It was only later on when they introduced the Defiant that it picked up pace and i'd say the final season was the best but by then DS9 had lost most of its viewers. I never liked the whole "instead of going to the aliens, lets bring them to us". I also felt the Dominion story and the whole Starfleet infiltration should of been introduced earlier.

In regard to Voyager and Enterprise... didn't really like either of them.

But, back OT, does any one know yet what the storyline of this movie will be? I mean the characters look too young to actually command a ship (we all learnt not to put kids at the helm from that ridiculous episode in DS9 ) so i'm guessing it will be set in the academy, although I can't see how they can make much of a movie out of this. I mean the main aggressors will probably have to be Klingons which is tired at this point... or maybe Nausicaans... i'll be interested to see what JJ does to make this prequel in any way interesting.

think a re-imagining is not a good idea a la BSG

Hang on, are you saying you *don't* like the re-imaginated BSG??

Oh, and TNG ftw btw! :)

Not at all the new BSG is great (except for the last season!) - just think Trek should move forward not backwards as Enterprise did which was awful

A new series set a few years after ds9/voayger methinks - decent actors and writing like Firefly and I'd be on board

As far as i know the main baddies in the show are the
    Romulans
, and as far as i know i will contradict established trek cannon

oh noes! Does that really matter so long as it's good?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,905 ✭✭✭User45701

its hard to say... i hope it is good but its kirk... i hope they dont change established annon because thats what pissed allot of people off about enterprise. You can still have a good storyline based in the established star trek universe

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,673 ✭✭✭✭senordingdong

    The bad guys are the
    Romulans
and the film will not contradict canon.

And on that note, where exactly did Enterprise contradict canon?

    the nazi aliens?

I just caught a bit here and there, but my god... nazi aliens

that wasn't cool when sliders did it, it isn't cool now :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,673 ✭✭✭✭senordingdong

Aliens went back in time to help nazis win the war as part of the temporal cold war.

It's a pretty common plot in sci fi.

I'm sorry but I simply won't stand for any bad things being said about sliders. Its easily up there as one of the best sci-fi series of all time including the likes of Quantum Leap and V.

I think it may well be a poor "Star Trek" film, but a good film if that makes any sense. I'm sceptical about it remaining true to the Star Trek ideals (which, in fairness, many of the series don't do, not necessarily to their detriment), but I look forward to another take on Star Trek. The current run of series/films has become somewhat stale.

It's a shame it has been delayed, I really don't want to wait that long for it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,905 ✭✭✭User45701

Those "nazi aliens" did not contradict established cannon.

ill giive you an example off hand.

Torpedos - the Earth romulan war was fought using nucular war heads.

Viewscrean - ENT should not of had a viewscreen as the tech for sending video at speeds though space did not exist at the time, it was devoleped post Romulan war.

I know there where a few others they came to mind straight away. Now i actually enjoyed enterprise, some eps where fantastic...

EDIT: ****: "Studio insiders said Star Trek has the potential to gross more in May than in December."

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,673 ✭✭✭✭senordingdong

    Hahaha.

In fairness, a reboot seems to be exactly what this franchise needs, and while they are all the rage a the moment, it's safe to say that Enterprise appeared before this fad became a fad.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,088 ✭✭✭✭_Kaiser_

Can't say I'm pushed on this new Trek movie at all...

(Btw, DS9 ftw - I've rewatched the last 2 seasons here over the past week or so, and it's definitely the best of the series)

Oh, and other ways Enterprise messed with established continuity:

    - The Ferengi episode. As if we won't realise if they don't say they're Ferengi

    - The Borg episode. As above, but even more noticible because of the fact that they ALWAYS hail with "We are the Borg. You will be assimilated. Resistance is futile"

The ONLY 2 episodes of Enterprise I liked were the mirror universe ones - ironically because the actors were playing characters that were far more interesting than their regular ones. Bonus points for the redone title sequence in these episodes as well.

TNG has to be the best, but DS9 i thought was fantastic also, i didn't like the time travelling crap in Enterprise
