Anything new on the point and shoot scene?

I've a relative going to New York in a few weeks and am going to give her money to get her to pick me up a camera. I'm probably going to splash out for a Canon 400D - I've got a 5MP camera on my phone for everyday point and shooting, and I'm thinking about taking a photography course in a few weeks as well..

I'm still considering saving my money and buying a compact point and shoot though. If you had $300 to spend in America, what would you buy? The PMA show was on during the week so their should be a few new bits and bobs about...

DPReview have a list of all the new cameras, and old cameras out on the market. A very good site to check out reviews of what is out there.

There's a canon g9 which apparently has 12MP, and a 6x optical zoom... which could be in the right price range.

The G9 is $460 (plus tax) in B&H, but it's certainly worth paying the extra bit to get it, it's fantastic. It's built like a brick (I know cos I dropped mine last weekend:D) and it has everything you'd ever want in a P&S. It also has the advantage of being able to take the same speedlight you use on a 400D, which makes a huge difference to the quality of indoor/night shots

hmmm...I sound like a right little G9 fanboy

This is more of a prosumer compact, but it's a beast nonetheless:

The 60 FPS feature is absolutely amazing.

Video at 300fps too? Wow. You could have some interesting slow motion fun with that!

+1 for this, I bought a G9 in Japan at Christmas for about €300. You might be able to find one reasonable in NY too.

Great camera, as above and offers lots of control. Makes a great backup for my SLR for travel or a night out.
